Item Line Breaks, Join Items, Split tems, Paste Into Current Item etc....

Submitted by viking on 2016/10/25 00:01
In Ecco, I can create a single item like this:
a
b
c
The line breaks are created by Shift-Enter.
1. How do I do that in IQ?

Also, how do I:
2. Join Items?
3. Split Items?
4. Paste into current Item?

Comments

1. same as Ecco Pro
2) Ctrl-Shift-J
3) Ctrl-Shift-S
4) same as any Windows program (Ctrl-V)

I've been using Ecco Pro for 18 years and still use it every day.  There aren't many things Ecco can do that InfoQube can't (quad-split screens is one;  named filters is another, I believe).

In the help file there's a chart comparing Ecco Pro and InfoQube.  It's likely out of date but it would give you a start.

Thanks.
1. When I do Shift-Enter,  the row height is not automatically increased.
The result is that the original text disappears, and is not visible until the new text is entered and the row height is adjusted.

That seems to be a bug? Surprised that it has not been mentioned before (or has it?).

In my opinion, the row height should be increased each time the user hits Shift-Enter.

p.s. Do you mind explaining why you use still use both programs?

The row height does increase for me.  I don't know why it wouldn't for your setup.  Maybe someone else has an idea.

I use Ecco Pro mostly because of emotional attachment.  I've been looking for a replacement for a long time but I think I'll always use Ecco Pro for certain things.  I've never tried Extensions because the last time I looked they didn't address a couple of the basic missing features for Ecco:  can't highlight text; can't move columns to the left of the primary cell.

I've been slowly and cautiously moving more and more of my work to InfoQube for months now.  I seriously considered Zoot and Ultra Recall and bought licenses for both.  The idea was to give all three a full, detailed try out but I've found that there was too much time required trying to learn three complicated programs at once.

The pace of development here has been amazing for at least the last year.  I don't think you'll find many developers who respond like Pierre.  The forum is also very helpful.  You don't necessarily get a response 100% of the time, so if you have an important issue that you think is getting ignored, bump the thread with a new post to bring it to people's attention.

Viking,

As you have found, the row height is not adjusted until the text you press Enter.  However, until then you should be able to see the whole contents of the field in the edit box - it will expand downward as needed.  However, if you are editing a cell at the bottom of the grid pane, the edit box cannot expand beyond the bottom of the grid pane.  When the edit box can't expand any further, the top contents of the field will scroll up out of the top of the edit box.

One way around this is to press Shift+F2 to bring up the Popup Editor.  That will give you a large, resizable, movable edit box that you can use to see the entire contents of the field.  I use the Popup Editor all the time.  Give it a try, you'l like it.  I have done one thing to make it a bit easier to use.  You will see an "OK" button at the bottom of the popup editor.  Clicking this button (or pressing Alt+O) will close the editor and commit the edits to the database.  I have made an Alt+O keybord shortcut to open the popup editor - that way I use the same keyboard shortcut to open or close the editor, like a toggle.

What is the "edit box"?

Here what I see before I hit Shift-Enter with cursor at the end of "backcolor"
Before Shift-Enter

Here what I see after I hit Shift-Enter (I get a blank line):

(the cell is not at the bottom of the grid pane)

Before shift-enter:
After shift-enter:

Are you sure you're holding down shift while you press enter?  It looks you're creating a new item by hitting "enter".

oddly I cant reproduce this in a file I recently created via New Blank file, but I *can* reproduce in the sample file -- I edited the same line as above

Edit// Sorry, hadnt read all of thread (i.e. Pierre's post below)

The same is true of the default shortcut: Shift + F2, it is a toggle

IQ grid text columns have 2 settings that affect how multi-line items are shown (not editing) or while editing
  1. Column > Wordwrap:
    • If Off, multi-line items show as a single line. When editing however, the line breaks will be shown
    • If On, multi-line items show and edit as multi-line
  2. Column > Use WYSIWYG Editor:
    1. If Off, the edit box will automatically expand
    2. If On, the edit box does not automatically expand. use Alt + Down arrow to increase the edit box size. This is an limitation right now.
The advantage of the WYSIWYG editor, apart of being WYSIWYG of course, is that it supports spell-check !

Yes, that solved it. I had the WYSIWYG Editor checked. Unchecking solved it. I hope that this limitation can be fixed.

Alt + Down arrow works well, I like that you can create a large text area to work

Just been trying out Alt+Down in wysiwyg mode..  In lieu of auto-expanding edit box, it does work very well.  Just for the heck of it, tried out Alt+Up, Alt+Left, Alt+Right.  Alt+Up shrinks the edit box, i.e. undoes the Alt+Down expansion.  Alt+Left and Alt+Right do nothing, haha!

It would be great if Alt+Down also scrolled the pane down when the edit box is at the bottom of the pane.  Oh well, I always have the popup editor.
