Item field wont accept a '=' at start

Submitted by Tom on 2017/03/07 10:36
If the item field text starts with an equal sign '=', any ensuing text entered disappears (on pressing Enter).

I used use '=' to ensure sorting at the beginning in an A-Z sort, and was copying this text from an older file (where it had not been a problem). So,
pasted the guilty text into the item field -- which worked. But when I edited the text (leaving the = at the beginning) the text disappeared.
I see that I am unable to write text to the item field if '=' is at the beginning.

I know that it's taboo in spreadsheet to start with an = unless it's an equation, but the item field is text, so thought it would/should be okay here.
And as said, had not been a problem in the past.

Try "space"=
Starting with = trigger the equation parsing

I can live with that,

thanks Pierre

Or use another character... lots to choose from if the only goal is sorting

of course,
using the '=' is a habit I got into with folders where it was no problem.
I'm reasonably well rid of it though from working a bit with spreadsheets the last few years.

bad habits die hard Pierre (but I'm learning)

The reason I'm posting again though, is that IQ gives no warning when starting with a '='
but simply deletes the contents of the field (item field in this case).

Hi Tom,

In v96, I've disabled parsing for text fields. I'll eventually add a field property for it.
