If they were as flexible as moving fields in the properties pane (hierarchical organization), I'd use them more.(Also, since the interface changes -- with grids in tabs, grids as panes, etc.--, it's a bit less useful. But I see you mean over the column headers -- yes, they would definitely get in the way if they showed by default.FWIW I would argue that these (Forms) icons are like a toolbar and should behave the same as the other toolbar / icons / menus.
