Wondering has anyone else noticed a steady increase in filesize disproportionate to the new data added to the file ?

Naturally, filesizes increase, but with my active file, I add very little to it on a daily basis - maybe a couple of text emails, and a couple of new (text) items per day.
Yet, it increases steadily in size - last time I checked, from 4 or 5MB to over 30MB i.e. when it is compacted it goes back to ~ 5MB, then it increases at a rate I'm not sure of (I guess at over 5MB per week). When compacted again, it goes back to around the 5MB mark.
I first noticed this a couple of months ago.

I haven't seen this before with IQ files, so it makes me a little nervous.

I just tried opening, adding and moving a few items, and closing file - there was no noticeable change in filesize (I didnt check at KB level).
Will keep an eye on it to try figure out when it jumps in size....

Do you use dropbox-like sync ?
Perhaps your compacted file gets overwritten by another one...

yes, using dropbox sync and haven't been consistently compacting both - will keep an eye on that.
But note that the compacted file, if updated (which the norm), will get synced to dropbox & other machine/s, so all should then be  compacted.

No.  My file size grows very slowly, and is very consistent.

FWIW I use dropbox to sync, but just let dropbox do it, and don't use the IQ dropbox feature.

It may be to do with dropbox -- but I'm using the IQ dropbox sync feature.
I see that the ~5.3 MB file is now ~7.3 MB when synced to my second machine -- I'll keep a close eye on it to see if that consistently happens.

BTW does simply keeping the IQ file in dropbox work okay for you David?

It works if you only one copy open at any one time and you always wait a few seconds before shutting down the PC (or pause)
Dropbox sync is the recommended method and it should not cause any file growth

Yes, but only because as Pierre said, I make sure to close on one machine before I open on another.  At some point I'll probably use the built in functionality.

It's been a few weeks since I looked at this:
the file went up to 66.5 MB -- when compressed again, down to under 6MB

Here from my backup programme in kB -- on the left the newer compressed version, oon the right the same file from the previous day

I not using dropbox to laptop so much lately, but will see what happens when I next update that (and report)

I've had that kind of important file size change a while ago, but not anymore. I'm not sure what caused it.

Maybe the data buffer size? (options -> program settings -> Other -> Data Buffer Size.)
According to my notes, when the MaxBufferSize setting is too low, the data overflow is written back as chunks to the database.
wonder if Pierre thinks it could have an impact on file size.

[Your file change probably doesn't have an impact on anything though -- the DB is so small.]

(Default is 0, but I have mine at 49000 to increase the performance -- my DB is around 640MB, that's why. I don't necessarily recommend playing with that option, but if Pierre thinks it could have an impact...)

I'll see what could cause that, but in the meantime, you can turn on Compact on Close...
