I'm trying out 9.99 and want to commend Pierre for the excellent new features.

Now that I've been using it for a few hours, I'm having a problem with how cells are selected.
This is how I think selection should work (and how it has worked in the past):

1) Single click a cell:
   - the whole cell is selected and is ready to be copied in toto.
   - If you start typing, text is appended to the end of the existing text.

2) Double click a cell:
  - edit mode is enabled
  - you cannot copy the entire cell (unless you now manually select all the text)
  - if you start typing, text is entered at the point where you double-clicked on the cell

In the past, I noticed inconsistency in the above rules: sometimes when I single-clicked a cell, it would enter edit mode.  It took me a long time to finally figure it out.  The rules above applied UNLESS you were clicking on a cell in the same row as the current selection.  In this case, it entered edit mode immediately.  I didn't know why this was the case but I didn't mind it once I understood the rule.

With 9.99, it appears that the selection process has been changed.   It seems that it depends on where the cursor is:  if you're over the text portion of the cell, it enters edit mode on single-click;  if you're over a blank area of the cell, it selects the whole cell?

Is this an intentional change?  I don't care for it because I do a lot of copy/pasting based on single-clicking cells.

Hi Wayne,

Yes, some changes were made to make it quicker to edit. No need to click twice to edit... I can add an option, but why not click left of the item, that never trigger editing. Right-click or long-click are other options...
Would the inverse logic work for you (click on text would select text (click again to edit), click on empty area would automatically start edit) ?

No, I wouldn't change anything.  Now that I know it's not a bug and understand how it works, I can adjust. I can see the advantage of one-click editing.  For selecting the whole cell I'll take an extra split second to find an open space to click on (lower right corner seems like a good candidate).

After using it further, I see that the "same row" inconsistency is still in effect.  I don't understand its purpose and think it should be cleaned up at some point as a low-priority fix.

To simplify my description, I'll use "select" to mean that the whole cell has been selected and "edit" to mean that you've entered edit mode inside the cell.

During normal operations, you enter select mode if you click on a blank area of the cell; you enter edit mode if you click in the text section.

Here's the inconsistency.

1) You're in select or edit mode in one cell.
2) You select another cell in the same row:
2a) Text area selected = edit mode (correct behavior)
2b) Blank area on left side of cell = select  mode (correct behavior)
2c) Blank area on right side of cell = edit mode (inconsistent behavior)

Re selecting blank area on left side of cell to enter select mode:  this is awkward because the space is very small if it's a one or two line cell that has subitems.  If you don't take extra care, you end up expanding the outline or selecting the whole row.

Re right-click selection to enter select mode: this brings up the context menu, which means you have to use the mouse to select "copy" (keyboard shortcut doesn't work at that point).

Looks like "long-click" is the option that works correctly in all circumstances.

Sorry if this sounds like an obsessive-compulsive rant.  I'm spending several hours a day right now copying and moving cells, and I found the selection rules to be confusing.  I couldn't find anything in the user manual that explains everything.

Now that I understand the rules, I think everything is fine the way it is, except that it would be nice to fix the minor inconsistency described above.  Would also be nice to have these rules in the help file.

Hi Wayne,
  • The inconsistent part is now fixed. Also, there is now an option in Tools > Options:
  • New: Grid: Option to set the single-click edit behavior (click on text or click on blank area)
