I have many items consisting solely of a link to an external file.

I'm constantly accidentally launching external files I don't want to launch.

I realize I can avoid it by carefully selecting the cell so that the cursor is not over the link but that doesn't really help as I'm not thinking that far ahead at the time.

I want:

1) Clicking on cell selects cell only without launching link
2) Links launched by double-clicking only.

Thought for sure there was option to control this but I can't find it.

Not sure if this is usable workaround for you, but you can select an item 'safely' by clicking on its row in the header column (provided it's visible, of course).

Have you found a convenient way of turning a file path pasted as an item's only text into a clickable link, i.e. without going through the Ctrl+k hyperlink dialog? I've always been wishing file links would be handled like URLs one day. So I sort of have the opposite problem, wishing for more automatic linking...

Not sure what you mean by row in the header column but it has to be the item column because in most cases I'm getting ready to create a new blank item, which can only be done if the item column is selected.

Re creating links to files without going thru link dialogue: I create most of my file links by dragging the file from the file manager.  That creates a link consisting of the file name without having to go thru the dialogue.

If you could make a pasted path automatically work as a link, wouldn't that give you a link that's hard to read?  The file name would be obscured by the path info in front of it.

I meant by clicking in the header column at the very left (again, you may need to ensure it is shown in your grid).

Before:

After:

You can then use shortcuts to work with the item, e.g. F2 to edit the item field etc.

Alternatively, if Pierre doesn't implement your suggestion for a different way to launch links, you might be able to add some filler text before all your file links with an auto-assign rule, e.g. "file: ", which would give you a space to click in without launching the file...

My workflow with Ecco was to copy file paths from my file manager to the clipboard and then just paste the file paths as items. EccoExt had some regex going that would recognize file paths and immediately turn them into a clickable link. I have never found the paths before the file names confusing somehow, I'm just used to working like that. I guess I'll just have to come up with an Autohotkey script that will create an active link in IQ for me when I'm pasting a lone file path from the clipboard.

Thanks.  I see what you mean now.  I'll give that a try.  I'm gradually training myself to pause before clicking so I can pick a blank space in the cell, so maybe it's not worth doing more than that (see my reply to Pierre)

Hi Wayne,

How about if it did like GMail, showing a menu:

Pierre,

That would be fine with me if you think it makes sense.  I wasn't really asking for a new feature.  I thought there was already an option for this and I just couldn't find it.

So yeah, what you suggest sounds good, but again, only do it if you think it's worth the effort for what's being added.  It's a fairly minor annoyance for me and something not worth spending too much time "fixing".

I see you've implemented Wayne's suggestion as the default behaviour. Is there an option to return to the old modus operandi? It was much more efficent for me. Now I have to click twice in two different places instead of just the one click and all three extra optons are easily available from the right-click context menu anyway.

Yes, I'll add it as an option
