I have a feeling this is a case of RTFM, but I'm going to suggest it anyway.
 
I usually search only the item field and would find it very helpful if there was a quick way of narrowing my search by checking things like 'is shown in the calendar' or 'this field must not be blank: Appointments' etc.

I just realized this is, of course, already possible by filtering in the 'Shown in' column! But can I use a 'not' filter there, e.g. 'not done'? The 'Exclude' option shown in previous documentation seems to be missing. Thanks.

that would be nice -- I reckon the Done was only an example, but Done is not a grid here so wont show here anyways (YMWV)

Saying that, the filter list in the 'Shown in' column could be better in other ways. For example, in this list, one cannot filter for just 'Quote'
It also would be nice to be able to select all, then deselect one or two [this presumably same as exclude]
 
 
The best way of doing this would be using the filter in the Sourcebar but I'm afraid I'm not qualified/able to help there. See Source Filter Editbox

Hm, the 'Exclude' option on the column filter shows up in other grids, but not in Live search. The source bar is also available in the Search grid. What I can do now is to show the items in the search, then filter for NOT 'ItemInCalendar'. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
