It sounds like something I want to do but I cannot tell what function it actually performs and could not find any documentation on it in the user manual.

What it does is set the hierarchical representation (the hierarchical tree) on a particular column. Usually, it's on the item column. But you could set it to be on another column.

 

Just to complete Armando's comment:
  • Ecco users are quite familiar with the concept of entering everything in the Items column. For non-Ecco users, this is not often the case. While it is recommended to use the items column (i.e. field) as much as possible, IQ does not enforce this.
  • Also, by setting the tree on another column, this has the consequence of flattening the content (no more indenting), which makes it look more like a normal document, while still enabling the collapse/expand. Any column can be the tree-column, even the left-most # column
