Yes this change was intentional. When you enter a date, say 12-03 (notice that it is not required to enter the year), and hit enter, you expect it to simply accept the date and not show the date dialog.

 

You can use F2 to toggle between editors. I wanted to standardize: Enter closes the editor, for all editors. F2 cycles through editors.
