I've created a new grid, but it doesn't show up in the vertical tabs on the left hand side of the screen. How do I make the grid appear there?

Can't you just move it (drag & drop to the left side -- click on tab...)

Perhaps the grids toolbar is full.. You can control which grid is displayed and in which order in View > Manage Grids
