How do I set up IQ so that whe I use it for writing, the text in the cell is fully displayed, so I can scroll it. Now the text is hidden, and I need to hover the mose over it to see it. Again, I would like this to be gully displayed, and if it's too long, to be able to see it the rest of it by scrolling.
Thanks.
Jay

Thanks. Multi-line is on. But it doesn't work.. Is it possible it's because the text is really large -- maybe larger that could be seen on screen?

Yes, that's seems to be a problem, whne the text is too large, the scrolling gets messed up, and also the items shrinks.

Take care,
Jay

How large is large? ... I got my grid with arial 20pt and it is still working fine. Can you provide a screenshot?

This is how Search comes up on my system. Always figured I could fix this in Grid Management. Perhaps Jay is experiencing a similar phenomenon.

When the text extends beyond the screen, then it shrinks and I can't see it, even when I scroll (the only way to see it is eight by hovering or by clicking on the cell. I would like it to appear, even if it cannot fit into the screen, and then to be able to see the whole of it by scrolling. It's important when I use it for writing, sort of like 1-pane outliner.

Take care,
Jay

Hi Jay, does the text look okay in the popup editor (shift-f2  or edit>popup editor)?  It might be worth considering as a work-around

Hi Keith,
Thanks. It does. But my point was that I just wanted to use it as a writing tool with collapsible items. Actually ecco, as far as I remember was great for that.. So I just want to see the text once it's expanded and be able to scroll up and down without the text doing strange things like shrinking or scrolling not working. I don't know if the benefit of it is really clear. I guess it may be for someone who writes and likes the idea of outlining.

Take care,
Jay

What do you mean beyond the screen?

Try this:
Create a grid w 2 columns: the # column & the item column.
You can write as wide as the IQ window is. Then the text flows to the next line, etc.
There is no way it can extend beyond the screen unless I'm missing your point.
Try my example. I use IQ to write all the time

Does that help?

Thanks.

This what I understood by extending beyond the screen:

Let's use you grid with just 2 columns. Then copy some large text (say 4 pages in Word), and paste it into the grid. The text is too big to see it all at once. That's what I meant by "extends beyond the screen". The text won't stay expanded -- the way that you would be able to see only its part, and you would have to scroll down to see the rest of it, just like it is in HTML pane. But in the grid it doesn't work this way (at least I can't make it work this way). It doesn't stay fully expanded. In my file it even worse, the only way to see the whole of it is by the method mentioned by Keith.

Take care,
Jay

I know. It works to a certain point, but then it doesn't. Look at my screen, it break in the middle of sentence. Also when you click in the scrolled down cell the cursor does funny things, doesn't go where it's pointed.

Yes, I see the break Jay. I just don't know how you got there.  I haven't seen that trouble here but, then, I guess I don't understand your problem.  Sorry I couldn't help you.

You can set the field (item, notes, etc) to multi-line:
[/quote]

Hi Pierre

It would be a worthy and logical improvement if we could toggle single-line/multi-line display at the Item level. If the user has a list of inventory, he'll need one line to identify each inventory item, but multiple lines to view or edit details when an item is in play. That's irrespective of the single-line/multi-line preferences for fields.

An item toggle would ideally be an actual system yes/no field that could be conditionally controlled. I'd even hope for a Grid-level option to override the Item-level option. Some grid designs are intended to favor overviews, others to favor detail views, regardless of a particular item's fold status after a session.

I realize you can achieve a similar header/detail visual effect by creating a single sub-item, but from a DBMS perspective that's bad practice. The user would be creating multiple records with the same live fields to represent a single entity.

Thanks for considering

Jerome

Splendid, much thanks.

Hi all,

The grid is not designed to handle large amount of text. Performance is not great and there is no support for scrolling. It would be best to put it in the HTML pane.

Thanks Pierre. Still a little disappointed. (It was possible in Ecco).

BTW - I traveled through Shenandoah recently. Nice! And nice to have you back.

Are there any limits to what can be written the HTML pane?  I am working on some books (planned 75 to 250 pages) I am planning on migrating to IQ.

Nope, I don't think so. BUT... If you have HTML content that's a few hundred pages, you might run into some performance problems... Although these items could probably be saved as MHT instead and worked on in MS Word -- there's an option in the HTML pane to edit with a separate editor (like MS Word or BlockNote (free) )

Limits are:
  1. If stored in the database: 2GB for the whole database
  2. If stored in a separate file: no known limits (or if any, the same as in IE)
I recommend saving large HTML content in the file system (option 2 above). IQ works the same whatever option you choose

#2 is default
(It's number 2.2.7 in Tools > Options)

This is not quite the same. If you simply start entering info into the HTML pane of a new item, the info is stored in the IQBase, not in the file system. It is saved in the file system in the following cases:
  1. Clipped the whole page from the web
  2. Clipped a section of a web page and saved as MHT
  3. Entered text in the HTML pane and then edited in MS Word or BlockNote
  4. Did Menu>>File>>Save As
The option you referred to (2.2.7) keeps a copy of the file in the IQBase. This can rapidly increase the IQBase size (hence not recommended), but makes it more portable.
