Pierre,

In at least three data programs I've used in the past (Zoot, Ariadne & ADM) there was a way to use the outline as a modified file explorer, i.e. the user could selected a folder in the program & ask the program to "register" (create a link) to all files in that folder. The process was generally very fast.

From then on, the user could find that folder in the outline w all files listed as sub-items. Clicking on the sub-item would open that file appropriately, i.e. within the program's browser or otherwise.

How can I do something similar in IQ.

For starters I'm thinking about this in conjunction with Scrapbook & writing files.

Thanks.

This is the first time I've tried this, but if you take a folder, select all the files in it (ctrl-a), then drag them to a new blank IQbase, grid, using the dialog like this: (nothing in Item Text), it looks like it could potentially do what you want.  I'll experiment with it some more, since I'd thought of using it to document some of the stored files on my machine.
Whoever gets it working first gets to document it!

currently you can manually create multiple items linked to files
so you could start by creating a link to the folder and then add the file links as sub-items - it would not take long
but I think the initial request would be very nice if implemented

If there's no sign of the request being implemented I can document 'the manual method'

I'll improve the method, but if you enter a path into the ItemHTMLFile field, the HTML pane will display the folder content :

Double-click will open the file (somehow, double-click on a folder does not navigate to that folder, I'll need to look into this issue)

Thanks for this fast fix, Pierre.  That will work fine.

Questions / Comments

In this manner:
there are no file = items, meaning they are not searchable within IQ
all items would be seen outside of IQ, i.e. never within the browser window

Did you intend this to be a work around or is this meant as a final fix?

How are these other programs able to register, i.e. create items, for all the files within the folder?  I don't want to open up other programs to test but the outliners that this function was available in -- if memory serves me -- were Zoot, ADM, Ariadne, UltraRecall. If what I'm saying is true, there must be a relatively simple solution.

I'm not sure that what I'm asking, i.e. registration is the best approach, meaning it could clutter IQ. OTOH it would allow the user to implement explorer type functions within IQ whereby the data is available but not stored in the dB

How is seeing files in html pane different than selecting files in a folder from explorer?

Can you post the latest build w this fix @ the end of the biz day. I'd like to play around with this function when I have time over the wknd.

Thanks again.

There is a plan to support folder monitoring (setup a list of folders and IQ will add/remove/move items to match the folder content).

IQ is a "work in progress". . Consider this a quick fix before the issue is fully addressed.

>How is seeing files in html pane different than selecting files in a folder from explorer?

If you drop a Word file on the grid and select link to HTML pane, then the pane will show the document. Editing is enabled.
