1st case -

If focus is on the HTML pane, When I press ctrl-shift-f (my own whrtcut key to bring up the quick search dialog from the HTML pane), the dialog appears but the focus is elsewhere.

2nd case -

a- Set it on auto close
b- Write something in the text box
c- Select a few items (more than one) press enter :

dialog disappears sluggishly, reappears, stays there for a while and re-disappears.  But then, if I press ctrl-f again, it doesn't appear -- a bit like if it was still active in the background. IQ memory footprint is also much higher than usual (like 270mb...) , and CPU use too (100%). Trying to shut down IQ because it has become unresponsive : several search dialog appear slowly, one after the other.

Also : search grid appears VERY slowly.  It takes a long time... And sometimes here's what I see :

There are other weird things, like the quick search dialog columns flashing periodically, etc.

Or sometimes, after pressing enter, it will disappear, and then reappear... and stay there ! I can start typing again in it.

Sometimes, items keep being added to the search grid after each search.

Something seems to be definitely wrong with the search dialog. It doesn't work like it used to, it's slow and I have to restart IQ each time I use it.

Anybody else having problem using the quick search dialog (the first time is usually normal... subsequent are slower and slower) ?

Comments

Armando, I agree that search dialog is funky every so often.

This has also occurred on my machine

Also clicking on Goto an item has caused IQ to drop out completely more than once, i.e. shut down on its own

Yes...

Pierre : I've completely stopped using the "quick search" dialog for now. It's really not working well. I think it started when you added the (otherwise useful) "this grid" search.

I'm surprised nobody else complained or confirmed these erratic behaviour. Maybe does it depend on a specific dB configuration ??

Quick Search not working for me either. I.E., my expectation when in Address Book and searching is that clicking "GO" would take me to that Item in the Address Book, but instead the Search Grid is opened which serves me no purpose unless Search grid is configured same as Address Book grid, which it isn't and won't be. Also get lots of subsequent flashing in the Quick Search box and other various erratic IQ behavior. Must exit and restart. Doug

IQ has many search possibilities:
  1. Show the Alpha toolbar and type parts of the name and hit enter
  2. Set Grid>>Auto-search (Ctrl-F3) and start typing. F3 to move to the next item
  3. Column filters (Ctrl-G) and start typing or select from the list (works well but currently the performance is poor when the number of item > 100)
  4. Fast-Search (Ctrl-F) and start typing. You can search the entire file or limit the search to the current grid

I'm still having obvious performance problems with Quick search (memory/CPU leaks, it seems ).
My DB is probably not the smallest (188mb, compacted), but it's also well under (more than 10x) the 2gb limit...

An image is worth, well, many words. Here's what happens after or while using quick search ("show details" was checked in that case) :

Close to 1 GB of Mem usage, and 96% CPU usage for one core (using a dual core).

Q : Am I the only one having problems with Quick Search performance ?

Mantis : 793

Here's an example (less Ram consumption, but still obvious performance problem) (edit : note how the search dialog comes back at the end, even if it was closed -- II also discovered several "Quick search" dialogs opened but hidden behind the main IQ window -- this is probably what brought the RAM consumption close to 1gb the last time... see previous post).

The flashing issue is now resolved. I'll post a new version shortly

I just performed a search with the Quick search dialog (Auto-close is "on"), and I think I found one of the "causes" of the problems here.

The bug seems to be linked to how the user leaves the quick search dialog (or triggers the closing of the search dialog).

After selecting items to display in the search grid :
- When I click on "go", everything seems fine.
- If I press Enter, I end up with an extra Quick Search dialogs hiding behind the main window (resulting in slowdown, extra RAM usage etc.)

There might be other things triggering that problem, but here's one at least...

(I'm not really following the thread order here...)

Any confirmation here ?

[Also : the "Quick search" related crashes, etc. were most probably related the GDI objects problem mentionned in the other thread]

Similar here:
If I press enter the items open in the search grid and a new search box shows 'on top' (NOT behind)

EDIT/  Searchbox sometimes shows behind - havent yet figured out why the variation here

I can confirm an extra search dialog opens on <ENTER>

The problem hasn't been resolved on my side with Version 0.9.24G build 2009-09-23 00:46:28 Beta.

Follow these steps closely.

Ctrl-f --> quick search dialog appears, then :

(see screencapture)

1- select  items with down-arrow.
2- press enter (Quick Search dialog "disappears")
3- Search Grid appears (BTW I like the new message to inform user about the process of displaying results -- informing user is often a good thing)
4- Quick Search dialog reappears and... re-disappears by itsef... (Sometimes it will stay there though, on top of the main IQ window, and I'm not sure why... Jan described that behaviour too earlier)
5- I minimize the main window
6- Quick Search dialog is hidden behind the main window...

If one repeats the operation (ctrl-f) without closing the Quick Search dialog hidden behind the main window, another Quick Search dialog will be added to the previous one, add infinitum until one reaches the maximum allowed GDI objects or RAM usage... (see screenshot)

Thanks Armando for crystal-clear demonstration of the issue. It is now fixed (0.9.24G3 build).
