It doesn't look like it's possible... but maybe did I miss something.
(I love that feature and  I wanted to use it to send nice HTML emails to my mailing list.)

Right now, this is plain text only.
 
How about using the HTML export >> template>>email-merge ?
 
Steps would be:
  1. Create an item
  2. Type the email content in the HTML pane
  3. Save it to a file
  4. Select your contacts
  5. HTML Export>>Template
  6. Select the file
  7. Preview (optional)
  8. Email-merge

Thanks Pierre. I forgot about that one.
But this won't send one e-mail for each contact, I believe, but a single one to all of them. No ?

This will send 1 email for each contact.
