I've got it setup (internally) to work with Gmail smtp. I'll update the UI to allow user configuration.

BTW, IQ is not a real mail client. Currently, there are 3 ways to send emails with IQ:
 1. Click on an email hyperlink. It starts off your email client. So no specific configuration is required
 2. Right-click on a selection of emails and select send email. It starts off your email client to create an email for each item selected. No specific configuration is required either
 3. HTML export email-merge: Works with a template to send boiler-plate type emails merged with database fields. This is what is used to send license info via email to users who have donated. It is not suitable for general purpose emails.

The HTML Export >> Mail Merge now support using GMail as the SMTP server. Details here: Mantis issue 0795

Pierre, I'm glad IQ now works w Gmail but I'm stumped as to where to enter the values beyond
To use GMail as an SMTP server, enter in Tools>>Options:
- SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
Where are the following values entered; I don't see SMTP Account, Password, Port listed in the Options.
Are you looking in Tools > Options > Pop Email settings?
Do you mean 'Account Name', Account Password'
Where do I enter the Port info?
I must be missing something really obvious & will feel silly after you point it out to me.
- SMTP Account: your gmail address
- SMTP Password: your gmail password
- SMTP Port: 465
I just can't get this to work.

Should I fill even the pop3 settings ?? Normally I should not.

I tried sending e-mail through Yahoo's and google smtp servers, to no avail.

I always get that message :

Thanks for the info.
That's exactly what I've been doing...

After 2 h of clicking, copying pasting, reading, closing my firewall and AV, restarting them, etc... I'm giving up sending mail with IQ for now.
Wow, sometimes these things can be very frustrating.

Anybody else able to send mail doing that ?

1- Select a contact in your IQ address book (yourself, maybe, for testing purposes...)
2- click grid-> export to a web page
3- in the dialog Click on "use template file"
4- select a template if you have one (if not, there's the default "invoiceEx.htm" one that you could use (it's in  [...] \AppFiles\ )
5- Check E-mail merge and fill the "e-mail address field" text box (mine is simply "email")
6- click on the e-mail merge button at the bottom.

What happens ?

[Edited the steps which were a bit unclear...]

I also get a slightly different error message since I've tried with a different server than gmail's SMTP.

Can you send an email from your email client (i.e. outlook, OE, TB) using GMail SMTP server? GMail has help pages for setting this up.

Achieving this is the first step in finding a solution to this issue.

Yes, everything works from outlook : sending using vidéotron's SMTP server or Gmail's smtp...

 Armando,
I don't need e-mail from IQ (at present anyway) but I thought I would try this out. I used the standard sample IQ base.
I configured the options as described in Pierre's screenshot above and then followed the steps you outlined in your message. After I clicked on "Email Merge" what happened was - nothing. I repeated the click a few times with same result then discovered I had successfully sent a mail message for each click. Then I noticed that a "1 Email sent" message appears at bottom  left.
I tried it with Gmail and another email account that uses a different server and both worked without a problem.
I know this doesn't help with your problem but it does show that the system works.
Good luck,
John

I've updated the UI to (1) provide feedback while sending and (2) show the number of emails sent.

Yes, all these new feedback dialogs are great. They really improve the IQ experience (in general - same for "quick search", etc.).

Also Thanks jdonlan and Jan

(jdonlan : using the e-mail merge very conveniently allows to use a contact list to send individual emails (invoices, whatever) with nice templates (with auto-filled fields), which would be harder with MS word or -- even more -- Outlook)

Pierre : I'm still not able to send emails

I still get the error Jan and I mentioned.

I do get a new one from IQ (one of these new feedback dialogs) :

"No e-mail address found"

But, I've selected a field in which there's an e-mail address. I've tried different fields, with the same results. Could it be an error with the e-mail field selector ? my e-mail field is "Email". I don't think it's the default field.

 Armando,
Thanks for those e-mail examples - I'm sure I can make use of the feature in time, one of the many things on my "I must put that into IQ when I have  time" list..
Playing around still futher I did try selecting a different field for the e-mail address in the HTML export window - FAX in this case since it's also a text field. It popped up the new "no Email address field" message box (thanks Pierre!) and then I put a valid address in there and it worked fine again. Very strange you seem to get the reverse in every situation. Are you trying with the sample IQ base?

Thanks John.
I tried with a sample DB : same result.
Maybe am I just missing a component of some sort... Pierre will check that.

Still can't send any e-mail (using mail-merge) from IQ.

Error : "The transport error code was 0x80070057"

Like Jan. I Tried Yahoo, Gmail...

=====================

Apart from Jan, and John, anybody else willing to try sending emails using "e-mail merge" ?

Here are the steps to set up IQ to send e-mails:

Tools>Options>POP-E-mails

fill the SMTP section.

then, to send one :

1- select item with e-mail adress (probably from your addressbook grid...)
2- ctrl-P (or File ->Print Peview)
3- select "Merge the selected item..."
4- in the HTML export dialog, select the "Use template file" tab
5- check the "e-mail merge" checkbox and fill all the other relevant fields -- like e-mail  address, subject, etc. (e-mail address field should probably be "Email")
6- Click on "e-mail merge"... The e-mail should be sent...

Besides a contact w an email address, is there any other data I have to supply IQ in order to implement smtp server?
I may be doing something wrong but I got the same result using 924g5 on09/26/09
