Could that be possible ? I think it could be very useful -- the item would become read only.

Comments

I'd like to see a read-only attribute capability for each field in an item.

That way, I could make sure don't accidentally uncheck a "yes/no" field in the grid, which I've done before.

A lot of my date and fields also should never change

I'm picturing something like this--Is this pie in the sky?  I'd like to put it in Mantis if it is not.

You mean a "per item" and then "per field" read-only config, which could have a different value for each item  ? If that's the case, I fear that it could quickly become unmanageable...

1- There's already a per field read only attribute in the manage field dialog. Most of my calculated fields are read-only.

2- I think it would be easier to have an option to just make an item completely read-only (like the  first part of your screenshot)... and if you need to modify a field from that item, turn off the protection, modify it, and turn it back on?

Created Mantis issue 0814.

Question for you... would read-only be for user input only, or would it also be read-only for equations?

I was thinking pure read only : user input and equations, as there are no ways to fully protect an item.

(I can see how that could be problematic though, and why one could want read only for user input, but not for equations.)

What do you think ?
I'll think about it too some more tomorrow.

I faced this "issue"/need again today (well, I actually face it a few times a week). And I t think that this issue of read-only was brought up again not too long ago... don't remember when.

IQ will need to provide ways for users to use templates, and these templates would use such features :

- Items in templates should be  read-only (nothing could overwrite them, not even equations), but could be copied.
- copy/paste the read-only items wouldn't keep (and paste) the read-only attribute -- or maybe a pop-up (for the whole paste operation, not for each item individually) could offer the option to keep it or not. That would be the best of both world, maybe.

... Items in templates should of course be locked (but that can be done already).

I use templates a lot myself, and because items inside them aren't read-only, I sometimes change their  content mistakenly. I'd really like to be able to protect them.

Read-Only should probably also prevent new parent-child linking.
