I find IQ's hoisting ability a real help but I'm wondering if it would enhance it's usefullness if the hoisted portion was opened into a 'hoisted' grid (or scratch grid which could be renamed by user)

I kind of do that already by opening a new (duplicate) grid window and hoist from there.
Right click on grid tab/name --> new window. Then hoist...
 
Advantage : 1- you have the item hoisted in the same grid configuration as the "original". 2- no need to create yet another button/feature/ etc.
 
Disadvantage :  1- working with several windows of the same grid can create some filter issues on refresh when using hoisting. Especially that hoisting doesn't like "save item state" for now.  But once that will be fixed... 2- it'll take maybe +2 clicks.

Armando, all valid points. Not that it's of any consequence -- and it's been years -- but I think EccoPro did it my way & now years later maybe your way makes more sense. I'm not sure why there would be filter problems if -- as you say -- the hoisted grid would be based on a duplicate window.  Let's see what other comments come down the pike.

On a related note I would like to be able to have multiple tabs on the same grid with different hoists. Right now that doesn't seem possible.

As Armando described, you can use New Window to create new 2nd tab and then hoist that new tab. That will give you an 2nd unhoisted tab and a 1st hoisted tab. But if you use new window again on the 1st unhoisted tab you will get the hoisted version of the grid in the new 3rd tab. If you unhoist the 3rd tab then the 2nd tab becomes unhoisted as well (after refresh).

So, regardless of if hoisting creates a new window/tab or not, I think the hoisting should be tab specific. Looking at the database, it seems IQ just created a single  "<GridName> - Hoist" view when you hoist. I'm suggesting it should create one with a unique name like "- Host2" and tie the tab to that.

Based on the discussion I would vote for Jan's original request. Hosting creates a new tab. And you can repeat it to have different hoists. Then maybe there is no unhoist, you just close the tab.

I'd prefer to have the choice to hoist in another tab or not. And I think the thread Thom mentions offers interresting options too.

I'm cool with that also. The main thing for me is that we can have multiple hoist versions (including not hoisted) on the same grid at the same time.
