Back to y original question: is it possible to sort TLI alphabetically & children by creationdate while I'm waiting for sort y level GUI?

Situation: My Contact List

-- Armando

---- conv 1

---- conv 2

---- conv 4

---- conv 3

-- Jan

---- 12/28/09 conv w Pierre re: next beta

---- 12/24/09 conv w Pierre re: current version

-- Pierre

---- email B

---- email A

---- email C

I'd like to be able to sort all contacts in my list in the following order:

TLI = alphabetical A -> Z

Children = Z -> A or 10-> 1

Grandchildren Z-> A or 10 -> 1

I tried the sort bar, i.e. d / d in order but it didn't seem to work & as I understand it, this is not permanent sorting order

I tried sorting filter but maybe I didn't use the right syntax of TLI = item ASC, creation DESC

I usually (but not always) adopt the following format when i take notes in my contact list

date (12/28/09) or date + time (12/28/09 01:54 pm)

In this way I can keep notes on the communications I have with my contacts, the most recent first (in descending order)

I am also open to other suggestions for a better way to keep track of these communications.

I'd use something like this: a dedicated date field, "AddressBook and date" as the source, and then sort it descending on that date.

How do you use grandchildren in your setup?

I would use ItemCreated to sort children & grandchildren

but the problem remains

I'm first sorting on TLI, i.e. Armando, Jan, Keith ascending

and then

sorting on children / grandchildren items descending

and I still don't know how to do it despite your helpful png

As to how I use grandchildren, it might be something like the following:

Keith = TLI

-- tel appt Keith 12/28/09 04:36 pm (seen in grid & calendar)

---- conv Keith re: how ot sort TLI, children & grandchildren in InfoQube, see HTML notes

Yes, you could do something as Keith suggests.

Pierre had something similar to the filter syntax in mind : separate TLIs sort filters from the children sorting with "|".

But it's still pending.

e.g. : item desc, priority | date, order

I've often wished for something like that but often it's at level x (e.g. fifth level down).

My thoughts were along the lines:

A context menu option (with sub-menu sortbox) -

sort sub-items by [ ______ ]

and (!)

again a context menu option -

sort all items at this level by: (again, with sortbox)

Sort by level is a great idea, it will come with format by level UI (similar to Ecco's)

format 1, filter 1, sort 1
- format 2, filter 2, sort 2
  - format 3, filter 3, sort 3
    - format 4, filter 4, sort 4

Item Context menu:

sort sub-items by [ add fieldname here ]

if not, I'll add it to mantis unless you say not to Pierre

It already works this way. Select cells in field YourField and it will sort sub-items by this field

Okay I select the cell of the field I want to sort by, & then I click Sort subitems ascending or decending in the context menu & it sorts :-)

Lovely - I never did know that was possible (& the amount of times I wished for it !!) - I thought it was always sorted alphabetically cause of the A-Z icon

Maybe I'm a bit too literal at times . . . (& I only ever used that option in the Item field)

It "simply" means this: Right click the Date field of the item ("YourField"), then click one of the Sort items circled on the context menu, and it will sort by date. Similarly, you can use "Item" as "YourField") to sort by sub-items by "item"
