Hi,

I'm in the crowd of ex-Agenda, ex-Ecco, users, so I get the basic idea of InfoQube (which I just heard about through the James Fallows mention). I'm excited to try it.

But I'm finding the "Getting Started" documentation too dense. I need some basics:

* If I'm starting to create items, how do I take an item I've already created and turn it into a child item?

item 1.1 (formerly item 2)

item 1.2 (formerly item 3)

* What does it mean to "hoist" an item(s)?

Maybe there's a section of the Getting Started that I'm missing that has this kind of information? Sort of a "If you're not familiar with InfoQube, try the following steps to create your own first items" section?

focus on the item & <ALT><RIGHT> or <LEFT> to indent / outdent

Hoist means that IQ will isolate certain data for you.

In the example, if you wanted to isolate child 2 w its grandchildren you cold focus on child 2 & 'hoist" and all you would see is from child 2 & down

Bruce, the menus are pretty good, documentation & dialogs are a work in progress. Many have seen continued simplification. Users are helping w documentation and Pierre (developer) is always open to suggestions on how to make IQ more transparent, i.e. user friendly. He is currently at work creating a new calendar GUI but is always around for bugs & to answer questions as are the rest of us.

Take a look thru the early pages of the online manual: -- link to nonexistent node ID 860 --

and see if that helps but don't be shy to ask questions. This is a very friendly forum (no attitudes)

I started w Agenda as well & have been thru a ton of these type programs & I think I've finally found the holy grail w IQ. All my daily work, writing, data gathering, activities are commited to IQ.

Like every program (especially Agenda) there's a learning to curve to be expected but it's not too bad as you have the basic concept already.

And, finally, most importantly, IQ is as stable as they come.

<ALT><RIGHT> will make the item a sub-item of the item above it

To move the item up or down the list use <ALT><UP or DOWN ARROW>

Drag-drop works by clicking in the text & dragging (clicking & dragging in blank space of an item allows you to select multiple fields)

I'd recommend downloading the tutorial here ( -- link to nonexistent node ID 1102 -- ) & have a look - any problems let us know & you can help us improve the documentation (by letting us know it's weaknesses)

Thanks everyone. The 14.51 tutorial was exactly what I was looking for. Any chance of moving it up to the Getting Started section? I'm excited to be giving this a try, and am glad for a community of helpers like this. I completely understand the pre-1.0 status of the software.

Just to add to what Jan said, you can also drag and drop items. Some users have problems dragging items around but I think it's pretty straight forward : just click (without releasing) on a filled zone (with Text, numbers..) of your item and drag. You can also click right at the beginning of a cell.

If you click and release you'll enter edit mode.
