This cannot be accomplished by hoist because hoist isolates item within same view, i.e. column sets, etc

What I'm asking about is viewing an item in a brand new view / window w/o columns, i.e. just item & children

You mean that the selected item would be seen in a newly created grid that has no columns ?

Personally, what I'd do is :

- Create a new grid which has "itemstagged" as source. Configure the grid to look the way you want. Alternatively, you could create as many grid you want with "ItemsTagged" as source, with different column configurations, etc.

===========
Once that is done, there are only 2 steps :

1- Select your item(s), right click, and select the "tag items" from the context menu. Alternatively you can select one of the other options from the submenu choices (clear tagged item list, etc.)

(Note that items can be removed from the tagged items list individually from the section in the properties pane.)

2- Open the the different grids with itemstagged as source. That's it.

You could also :

1- open a grid with only the item column showing
2 use the quick search dialog to find the items you want to display and select : "Show selected items in the current grid as hoisted items..."

If all that doesn't do what you want, we could think of a new feature -- maybe something using hoist.

Gotta say I like the simplicity of Jan's version  :)

I thought it might be easier to have it open in a new window of the same grid. (but obviously I'm no expert on what's easier for Pierre to implement!)

[ Hoist in a new tab ] or something like that

this is kind of already possible (with just one or two extra steps):
1- Select your items, hoist your items...
2- Open another window and unhoist it if you need to have the broader view at the same time.

However "Hoist in a new tab" is kind of nice... :)

that's an easier way of doing it (than tagging I mean).
I often get a bit disconcerted when I open another instance of the current grid - it opens in the state the grid was when last saved/closed which is often very different from current state (I must add a shortcut to Grid>>save)

True, but it doesn't exactly answer Jan's request : show items in a another grid which would only display the "item" column. That's why I didn't mention it in my first post.

How about adding something like: "Show item(s) in scratch grid" ? The scratch grid already serves as temporary display of items in a field, this is a special case.

How about "Show only item(s) in scratch grid"

I think that would do it, Pierre.
As I remember, there was something similar in Ecco. And if user wanted to retain that simple item only grid, user could re-name it easily by clicking on the tab title.

Thanks
