I figured out what the problem is (I probably disabled that FEATURE a while ago, tired of seeing web linked documents in the ie browser without any access to the menus, etc.).
1. Launch Windows Explorer. 2. Select “Folder Options...“ from the Tools menu. 3. Select the “File Types“ tab. 4. Scroll down the list of “Registered file types“ until you find “DOC - Microsoft Word Document“ and select it. 5. Click on the “Advanced...“ button at the bottom of the dialog. 6. Uncheck the “Browse in same window“ checkbox.
Of course, I did the reverse process...
BTW : being able to edit documents in the HTML pane is a big +
Both of you must be running XP, because this is not solved in Vista. The Folder Options tab in Windows Explorer does not exist in Vista. Getting a .doc to open in IE is a major pain. I've followed the directions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927009 and made a further registry edit. Neither one did the job. Internet Explorer keeps asking if I want to save or open the file, and when press open it asks me again.
I know this is a Microsoft issue but it's very frustrating, as this is a great feature of IQ.
Yes, I had already been to both of those websites. The link at the pranavwagh blog is to the same Microsoft Knowledge Base that I listed in my post, and I also did the registry edit he mentions (changing the Dword to 0). I just uninstalled Office 2007 and rebooted. IE still won't open a .doc and neither will IQ.
I was not able to get this fixed on my desktop. My laptop had the same probem and when I followed the steps above it worked fine, but for some reason IE would not open those documents on my desktop.
I'm also pessimistic about this changing in our favor. From the above link to the MS fix, "However, this Internet Explorer feature may not exist in future operating systems that are later than Windows Vista."
