They both have a different function. The main button just activates/deactivates the hoisting and the sub-button really hoists what is selected.

No I didn't know that. And I think it may be a little confusing to others as well. 

I was assuming if I focus on an item & click main hoist button it would hoist that item (and that's the way I think it should be)

Instead I'm not sure what it does.

This morning I tested again before writing this response & my contact list was alpha filtered for "R" & when I focused on an "R" item & clicked the main hoist button, an item from "N"  was hoisted. (that was from yesterday & program was closed between day 1 & 2)

This makes ABSOLUTELY no sense to me at all.

 

In conclusion I think there may be a bug but in addition:

(1) the main hoist button should do exactly as it says & anyone would assume

(2) all refinements or permutations should be in the sub-menu

I understand what you mean. I made the same mistake the first time I used hoisting. However, it did make sense to me as soon as I understood what the buttons do -- the tooltip explain it.

 

1- The main button toggles hoist ON/OFF (and... if nothing was hoisted, it hoits the selection -- that is probably what confuses the user since the first time he uses the function, when nothing was ever hoisted, it will hoist the selection. This is what should probably be changed if the main button is still going to toggle hoist ON/OFF -- rather, a dialog should probablyappear and ask the user to first hoist items with the sub-menu button. This is a mistake that the user would probably make once only, anyways and so this dialog would appear only once or twice).

 

2- the sub-menu button allows the user to change what is hoisted.

 

 

So... That one is a "tough call" 9relatively speaking). Should the buttons funtions be reversed ? I'm used to the current implementation.

Some reasons :

 

1- It's easier to see that hoisting is ON if the main button is pushed (and the color changes), and OFF if it's not pushed (would be harder to see if the button showing the hoisting state was In a sub-menu).

2- it makes more sense to be able to activate / deactivate the hoisting by clicking on a clearly visible button than in a sub-menu button.

3- Hoisting selected items is available from the item context menu (right click --> "Hoist selected items")... Well, unless I added that myself.

 

But... As I said, I can see your point.
