Subject says it all.  IQ is so "personal" I am having a hard time getting my head around how it could be used in a multi-user setting.  How does a team member know that someone else entered a new item that needs their attention?  Sure, you can create a field for the user but they really need a way to see brand new items easily.  I suppose a grid could be set up for that based on a time variable?  And how do you stop it from being a free for all?  Are you just using one database per project?  We tried to use OneNote in a team setting with limited success because of its unstructured nature, even though many people love it as a personal information manager.

The first step is to split he IQBase into Data and UI. Each users has a separate UI but data is shared.

To bring Items to the attention of user1, you can set the ActionOn field to user1. User1 simply opens a grid where all items with that tag are shown.

The journal can also be used to see new items

The ItemOwner field can be used to filter stuff entered by other users.

I have 1 customer who have used IQ for the last 2 years in such a team setting and they are very happy with it (8 networked users, plus 1 manager who uses the pivot table to gather statistics)

Is it possible to have a shared file contain not only shared grids, but grids dedicated to individuals?  For instance, could we configure it so that there are let's say 10 shared grids, while still allowing each individual user to have their own "personal" grids?  Obviously they could just/still have their own database file, but IF practical I'd prefer to have a single unified environment for them to work in.

No, this is not possible. Remember grids don't contain anything, they are display devices (like your TV)

By default, everything is shared. By splitting into data and UI, the data remains shared, but each user has his/her own UI (grids, forms)

You could use the AlphaFilter toolbar on some grids to filter on ItemOwner and that way only see data from yourself

Let me rephrase then.  If each user can have his/her own grids, I could for instance create one set of grids and fields with the preface David such as "David-Tasks".  As a team we could also create a large number of fields prefaced with the word team such as "team-tasks".  Now each user could create 10 grids for team use and 10 per individual use, no?  Granted the 10 grids for team use would not be "shared" in the true sense, they would still be grids set up for each person, but they could very much function as "team" grids, no?  I realize of course that doing this with a lot of users might not be feasible, and that everyone could see everyone's items if they wanted to.  But I'm just trying to envision a way that one person who understand the ap could structure it for everyone's use, and say "here are the grids we all use" and "here are the grids for just you".

What say you?  Practical?  Not practical?
