copy item from grid "A" as XML selected item (no sub-items)
paste item into grid "B" in the midst of a thread (make it 4 levels for test)
paste choice: NEW or LINKED.
If user chooses LINKED, item AND ALL SUB-ITEMS are pasted even though copy choice was for NO Sub-Items
very confusing

I think item only should paste either NEW or LINKED
In case of LINKED, new sub-items would also appear as sub-items to original parent

Otherwise, I suggest that the dialog be clarified as pasting as single item can only be as a NEW item

Hi Jan:

I don't know about that. It seems to me that this would be the desired behavior. The link, or clone, is just that and everything follows it. When I copy, I want something that is unique and can be modified without changing the original. Perhaps someone can do a better job with explaining. By the way, Ultra Recall has this behavior too.

Since "linking" (i.e. : Either adding new parents links or new fields so that item(S) appears in other grid(s)) is just linking, children will follow (unless other filters prevents user to see them, but that's another story).

So, basically : yes dialog should just be clarified. Pasting without the children can only be as NEW items. Not "links". (My brain aches every time I use the "link" word to describe these items... )

yeah...
you'll be in trouble Jan if actual (hyper-) linking is ever introduced into that dialogue :-)

As discussed in another thread, this dialog will be modified, both the wording and the behaviour, to make it clearer
