I must be doing something wrong - it cant be this hard. No matter what I do, I only get the specfic item(s) in a separate grid with no context and no apparent way to get it.

How do you get search to simply take me to the item location of my data in the active grid?

Thank you

Hi and welcome to the IQ Community !

There are a couple of ways:
  1. In the grid, you can turn on Auto-Search and simply start typing
  2. In the grid, you can use the column filters
  3. In the search window, you can specify to limit the search to a particular grid and / or you can specify to show the results in the current grid
Note that this feature was changed in v0.9.25W9 and is broken (show in current grid), and will be fixed in the next release (v0.9.25W10)
There may be other ways, perhaps others can chip in !

HTH !

also, try the Alpha-numeric filter; click the A filter button, a new toolbar pops up; check in the new toolbar which field is being filtered and get all items (top-level only I think) starting with the chosen letter

Column filters are nice - some helpful info in case you havent used them much:
  1. you would have to know in which column the search term is (sorry, I'm stating the obvious there...)
  2. item has to be displayed in the grid (you cant filter for a sub-item that is not showing (Ctrl+1 through to Ctrl+9 will expand all items from 1 up to 9 levels. Ctrl+Shift+1 etc will expand selected items)
  3. Settings that affect it: menu:Grid >Column Filters >Filter Type (only Top level/All items)
  4. you cannot paste into the column filter box

see 2. Filtering for some more info

EDIT/  menu: Grid >Auto-Search is probably the nearest to what you want as it wont hide all other items.
Similar to column filter though in numbers 1 & 2 above

FYI You can't paste with Edit > Paste or Ctrl+V, but you can with right-click > Paste

mdfox78,

Hope you didn't shoot yourself    so you can try the following
Maybe you know this already.
Check Grid > hierarchy > full hierarchy
