 Hi IQ Users,

In this release (v0.9.26PreRel41):

What is the IQ "Omnibox" ? ...

Using a configurable hotkey (Alt+/ by default, the same one used by Google Docs), the focus will move to a search box on the menu bar.

Using the Omnibox, you can:
  1. Enter a grid name, hit enter to open it
  2. Enter a command (i.e. bold), hit enter to execute it
  3. Enter a search string to show the results in the live-search window
The list is dynamic and auto-completes, so as you enter characters, the dropdown portion will show relevant matches.

Keyboard users will LOVE  this new feature !!!

Timing is perfect, I'm sure, as the feature will be available in time for Valentines day... LOL

(Portable only version for now. Installable one will be available in a few days)

Hello.

I'm using a French keyboard, where forward-slash / is upper-case colon :.

Keying the key combination alt+/ does nothing.

The key combination is not documented in file alt.shortcuts.tab accessed by means of Tools / Shortcuts / View all shortcuts.

I cannot find an option to change this shortcut key combination in Options / Program settings.

So this particular InfoQube keyboard user has been disappointed in love – and that on Valentine's day...! Please come to the rescue of my fluttering heart...

I have a similar problem using a German keyboard:
/ = Shift+7
and
Alt+7 = }

Shortcuts can be customised via the menu :
Tools >Keyboard Shortcuts >Customize:
Keyboard tab:
-
but I couldn't find the relevant shortcut there ...

I've updated the released version with this fix
  • Fixed: Cannot change the keyboard shortcut for the new IQ Omnibox
One way to change the keyboard shortcut is to right-click on any toolbar and select customize.
Once the dialog is shown, right-click on the desired button and use the context menu to make changes

Actually, it is available to download; but it doesn't have a new version number .

So I download the new version, right click and attempt to find the new functionality.

Under the tab Commands,  I find Edit,  presumably for the edit menu in the product. Here I find something called Omnibox.

I do what I'm told to do, and drag the Omnibox item onto the edit menu – the top line, which contains file, edit, view, tools, help. That is definitely a mistake, because it leaves a nasty blob (down-arrow and empty box) on top of the menu bar, which cannot be clicked and therefore does nothing. See Point 1 in the illustration below:

I am not even sure how to remove that nasty blob…

However, I have by now learned something, which is that the icon for the Omnibox feature is a pair of binoculars (thus reusing the previous find icon, which makes sense). I then spot the same icon on the menu bar, highlighted as point 2 in the illustration above. I click on it, and hey presto!, I see what I take to be the Omnibox: point 1 in the second screenshot:

Now this is beginning to look more promising! As you can see, I have typed the word Zotero. The find results appear to be the result of search entire file.

So far, so good. The following small problem and feature appear to exist:

Small problem: if I hover the mouse over "Show items in the Current grid", I am informed that the current grid is Appointments, which is not true.

Feature: The Omnibox is displayed where the source bar would normally be displayed. The grid menu has entirely vanished, so I cannot restore the source bar. In fact, all I can do is to click on the cross beside the binoculars symbol, which closes the Omnibox. Actually, that is fine, because then I can see the source bar again. All very good!

However, I have still not succeeded in changing the keyboard shortcut for the Omnibox feature. So I return to further customise the toolbar. Under customise/commands, in the edit category, I find the icon for Omnibox – see point 1 - but I do not find a means to change the associated keyboard shortcut.

Under Customise/Keyboard/Edit, I do not find an entry which I can identify as Omnibox. Nor do I find any item which currently has the shortcut key alt + /. So I have failed in my initial mission, which was to find a way to change that shortcut.

Summarising, my remaining problems are as follows:
  1. I have created a nasty blob on my menu bar, which I cannot remove.
  2. When I hover the mouse, I am told the wrong current grid name.
  3. I cannot locate the command for Omnibox in a way in which I can change the keyboard shortcut for it.
On the positive side, the new Omnibox feature looks to be potentially very useful. I no longer feel quite so disappointed in love...

Hi Mark,

I've fixed most of the issues you have raised.
To remove the nasty blob you can reset the menu/toolbar (right-click > customize > reset) or click-drag it out when customizing the menus.

Note however that :
  • No need to add the Omnibox anywhere. It should appear in its own toolbar
  • You're confusing Find with grids. Find as a tab in the workspace has been there a long time (> 1 year) and nothing has changed recently.

  1. Nasty blob removed - thanks!
  2. Thank you for pointing out that the Omnibox was under my eyes all the time! It works very well on finding text in items, and is a major advance in that respect.

[/quote]Pierre,
this doesnt work here - the box shows in the context menu for the new shortcut - but no matter what I type, nothing shows in the box - I think I have the most recent version (see below).

I havent had time to mess around with it much - it did show automatically here (copied over onto a recent portable 'install').

OK I get it - I have to type in the shortcut - it wont recognise the actual shortcut
i.e. pressing Altkey and e.g. the '4' key shows nothing
whereas if I type the characters:
Alt+4
=>
that works...

Hi Tom and others.

Well, I am glad that you get it – but I do not. I do not understand what Pierre is saying and I do not understand what you are saying. "Right click on the desired button" – but which is the desired button? Is that the button in the customise dialogue? Which button in that dialogue, under which tab? Or is it the button on the product itself?

Because neither work for me...

And why does it sometimes seem that "everything" in this product is so difficult? Every time I come to do something new I find that I have to spend hours and days doing it. That is why I so often make limited progress, hit a wall, back off for months and try again. I accept that I may be a bear of very little brain, but all I want is decent documentation for facilities that work straightforwardly. The good news is that I am motivated to try again, because there is so much that is good about InfoQube.

But if you think that I am being unreasonable, just make a list of all the wonderful people who have contributed to the development of this product in the past but who are now no longer active on this forum. Perhaps they are lurking in the shadows waiting for release one; certainly I hope that is the case. But many of us have been waiting five or six years for version 1. This, a desktop-only product intimately linked to Microsoft technologies, risks being eclipsed by Web-based developments if it is delayed much longer.

As I have said before, I am very willing to help with documentation – but far too often I can't write the documentation because I can't get the product to do what it is supposed to do!

Pierre, please forgive the rant. But you seem to be concentrating on unasked-for functionality, driven I think by developments made by your grid supplier. This is  – it seems to me – at the expense of priorities often debated in this forum. I do not think that it is good enough to say that there is a roadmap but that it is secret. That has me worried... Especially because I and many others desperately want you and your product to succeed.

Mark,

The secret roadmap was a joke ! I try to respond to user request and bug reports.

As for the menu customization, it is identical to how it is done in MS Word, Excel, and all MS products... So I did not invent anything here

You right click directly on the button you want to modify on the actual toolbar or menu, not in the customize dialog.

I'm cleaning up this dialog (a clone of what is used in MS product by the way) soo all commands show up and in the correct place

Hi Mark
an image probably explains it best:

the Customise dialogue has to be open before right-clicking on the button (with the Omnibox, right-clicking on the field also works.

Mark,

Not at all, easier / quicker access to grids and commands have been asked many times in the past, so has an always visible search box.

The Omnibox does both... It basically searches for grids, commands and items.
May also eventually include fields, to easily make field-value changes, without using the properties pane. Will see if users request it...
