I got this error message when I clicked on one of my subitems:

I did a repair but still get the same error message.  Can I just delete this item and move on?  Or should I return to a previous version (and lose work)?

Update: it won't let me delete the item.  I don't know if there's a cause effect relationship, but it happened right after I accidentally create a clone of an item instead of a new item.  I deleted the original item and it's clone, and started over.  I created two separate items in the same spot and now I'm getting this error message on one of them.

Not sure how your backup is setup - be careful if you only have the minimum 2 backups - everytime you close your file one of these may be replaced.
Maybe make a temporary copies as appropriate, so info doesnt get lost.

You could:
  • open the backup (without replacing existing copy) -- hopefully it's one with the item in question, (but in good nick)
  • See how much info is missing in the backup --
  • add everything that is missing to the backup, and save as a new file
  • Move (and keep) the current (error-giving) file, then replace with backup

Note there is another option if Repair doesnt work -- IIRC it's called Rebuild -- I not expert enough to comment on it but you could try it on a copy of the file if you wished.

Thanks for the options.  I have plenty of backups.  Maybe I'll copy/paste the recent work into another program then recreate the  the missing items in the backup file.

Before tackling this problem, I decided to do some work in another database.  That one locked up every time I opened it.

As much as I hated it, I rebooted my computer and I think things are back to normal.  The item that was giving the error message is gone.

Off topic note:  when I tried to reboot I got the error message: "cannot find operating system".  I immediately thought my motherboard had gone bad again, or my C drive.  Did a quick search on my ipad and found the solution:  if you boot with a jump drive attached, the computer will (at least sometimes) try to boot from the jump drive.  If it doesn't find an OS there, it gives the error message.  I removed the jump drive and it booted fine.  Whew.

Just a quick note on that : not sure what you mean by clone, but if you mean the "same item with multiple parents" or "the same item seen in various grids", then deleting once is enough. It's the same item. If you need to delete an item twice then it wasn't the same item, strictly speaking

It was the same item but it didn't have multiple parents.  They were both under the same TLI.  If I changed one, the other also changed.  When I deleted one, the other also disappeared.  Then I created a new item and started getting the error message.

I dont understand this bit Wayne:
if they were the same item, why would they show twice under one parent?
Or was that part of the buggy-ness?

Or do you mean that they were in the same family-tree so-to-speak, but maybe at different levels?

Yeah, must have been part of the bug.  Can't remember exactly how I created the second one.  I tried to edit the text and when I did, I noticed that the text in the item immediately above it was being changed to match.  Then I highlighted it, and one above was also highlighted.  Then I deleted the bottom one, and the one above it disappeared, too.

I'm using the installed version now and hoping it'll clear up some of these issues.

I don't think that this ever happened to me in 8 years. I wonder what could be the problem. Hard drive problem? Syncing with Dropbox?

I don't sync with dropbox.  I have software to check hard drive integrity so I'll try that.  On another thread Pierre suggested moving my portable setup to a protected folder or using the installed version.  I really hope there's some overarching solution.

I had that problem a while back.
I dont think I reported it properly (will check - there was a lot going on at the time - with IQ and with me...)

I solved it via my recommended restore tactics in second post above, and havent had the problem since.
