I suppose with added functionality, such as the Home Page, the options.ini and settings.ini change a bit.
So when I want to upgrade the new version I cannot really just copy/paste my customization folder and run it or can I?

Comments

I'm on a portable install, and when I upgrade, all I have to do is unzip the new version on top of my IQ portable installation. I then receive messages to overwrite  stuff or not, and I say yes to all. "Customisations" are preserved.

After an upgrade, I usually reset the  menus toolbar though (and remove the menus I don't need -- it takes 20s).
Because of the relatively frequent changes in options/menus, I never customize those menus. Rather, I create my own separate toolbars that I update from time to time with the new options.

Do you customise shortcuts as well Armando?
I remember on occasion, everything had to be reset to defaults in order to display/introduce some new feature+shortcut, and my customised shortcuts got lost. Then I got lazy and just stuck with default shortcuts.

Hi Tom,
Almost everything can be backed up/saved. The keyboard shortcuts can be saved and restored.
In tools->keyboard shortcuts, you can view them and save them with some other name-date, and then re-load them if needed.

I recall what Tom says as well, I'm not sure, but I think it happened most recently when Pierre rolled out the new and improved display mode and context parents functionality.  I don't remember if I just lost my customizations - or was told we needed to reset to get the new toolbar items working correctly.  All I know is I remember losing a bunch of my customizations on one particular upgrade.  And because of it, like Tom, I became hesitant to spend a lot of time customizing the toolbar and right click menu heavily - which I'd very much like to do.

So I'd really appreciate some clarification on this issue from Pierre as well.

If you reset a toolbar, you'll lose your customisation, obviously. The trick is to create you own independent toolbars, not customize the default ones (although you can if you accept to loose stuff and redo it once in a while).
That way, with your own custom menus, etc., you can always remove and change your stuff at will and update them with new functionalities (to do that, just make the  toolbars visible and drag-drop from those default  toolbars to yours, in customise mode), when desired.

That's what I do, from time to time. But since I'm mainly a keyboard person, there's not much to change over the course of a full year...

Thanks Armando, that sounds like a good strategy - only modify custom toolbars.
