Doing some customising of keyboard shortcuts at the moment and I thought a shortcut for "Context Parents" would be really useful - something you could flick on and off. But I can't see it in the Customise > Keyboard lists. I've looked under "Grid" and under "View".  Are my eyes just skidding over it or is it really not there?

I tried this workaround, but could not get it to stick:
  1. open the customise shortcuts/toolbars etc.
  2. right-click 'Context parents' in the menu (or the button for same)
  3. add shortcut
Problems are
  1. shortcut not added automatically -- needs to be typed in manually, but how? e.g. Ctrl+J | Control+J | CtrlJ | ControlJ (none working here*)
  2. shortcut does not seem to be saved anyways (may be saved if correct format found?)

Thanks Tom! I actually got it to work - and "stick".
 
a) with the "Customize" window open, go to the Grid > Context Parent option and right-click on it to customise (I didn't know you could do that!)
 
b) I selected Ctrl+Alt+P as shortcut. I just typed those characters into the box as literal text, didn't press Ctrl or Alt. (Tools > Keyboard shortcuts > Show all shortcuts shows the formats you need. Going by that, in your examples, Ctrl+J should have worked but the other ones wouldn't.)
 
c) So once i did that this shortcut worked and was in the customised keyboard file (User.shortcuts.tab). However, as you said, this setting doesn't stick when you reopen IQ. What i did was, before exiting IQ, made a copy of the .tab file somewhere else. Then when I reopened IQ I did Tools > Shortcuts > Load custom shortcuts and loaded that copy back in.
 
And there it is. Literally "a long road for a shortcut" perhaps - but it's a useful shortcut.

Yup, the post "disappeared" when I added the screenshot. The post was still there when I clicked Edit though. Remove the image and the post reappears.

Not sure why that adding shortcut so complex -- a bug I guess.
 
Note that I had no success at all with customising shortcut, so something different going on here:
may be to do with german keyboard?
OS (win7) is in English, but it's still possible I have to use e.g. 'Strg' instead of 'Ctrl'. No: tried that & it doesnt work either...

Normally, adding shortcuts is quite easy.
1- You can do it in the "office like" interface of  the "Customize" dialog (write click on toolbar/menus and click customize) : keyboard tab of the dialog.
 
2- or directly in the menus/buttons: while you're in the customize mode, customize dialog visible, select any button/function you want to edit with your "mouse",  and right click on it to see the various options
 
You know all that, but I'm summarizing for other readers.
 
Anyway: if you change the shortcut directly (by left/right clicking on the menus/buttons, then using the "writing" method, eg. ctrl+J), look at how the other buttons with working shortcuts are defined, and just copy that syntax.
 
If it doesn't work, I suspect some shortcuts are conflicting. It could also be possible that one way works (#1 or #2) and not the other. I think I've experienced that, but a long time ago.

Well .... it works now 
Ctrl+J
machine was hibernated in the meantime, otherwise dont see anything I did different.
 
I had done a search for Ctrl+J in the file displayed by:
menu: Tools >Keyboard shortcuts >View all shortcuts
 
Also, works correctly after restarting IQ -- so didnt have to do any of that stuff as per David's post.
Seems to suggest that something's buggy all the same.
