1) Item is assigned to the grid source field. Display mode is set to outline.
2) Item is also assigned as a subitem in the same grid.
3) Item displays correctly in its subitem position but will not display at the top level of the outline.
Could someone explain this?
I reread the Display Mode section of the manual and did not see an explanation.

How do I ?

Hi Wayne,
I update the doc to explain it better: 1. Grid Display Modes

Read it twice and still don't see where it explains why an item assigned to the source field does not show in the grid. The fact that it's also assigned as a subitem in the same grid shouldn't affect that. I can't figure out what I'm missing.
A screenshot would help !

Never mind. I'll just live with it.

I'm not very skilled at this, so perhaps I am wrong or simply don't understand what is being raised, but I think you should be able to get an item to display in both places in a grid at one time. And I tried this out several times before writing this.
Just being in the source field, however, does not mean that an item will display as a TLI if its position has been reassigned. If one drags a TLI to a subitem position, it will then display only as a sub-item. If one drags a TLI to a subitem position, and then holds down CTRL before releasing the drag, a "+" appears, and then one can drop the item when one wants, and the item will display BOTH there and in the original position. If one has already turned the item into a subitem, one simply has to drag it back to a top position, once again holding down CTRL before releasing the drag. And then it displays in both positions, both top-level and subitem.
At first this didn't work at all for me. It was frustrating. When I held down CTRL and dragged, it extended the selection, which is not what I wanted. One has to start the drag WITHOUT CTRL being held down, and only hold down CTRL AFTER one has started dragging if one wants to get the "+" symbol and be able to move to where one wants to duplicate the display of the item. I hope this works for you.

Thanks, Comvox.
Using your method, the item still disappears when the screen is refreshed, leaving only its assignment as a subitem.
It appears that you can't have an item as a TLI and a subitem in the same grid when you're in Outline mode. You have to switch to Flat View. At least, that's what I'm guessing at this point.
There's undoubtedly a good reason for it (which I'm trying to understand) but I bet this is a common source of people "losing" items and not understanding why. It certainly is in my case.

Hi Wayne and comvox, The doc…
Hi Wayne and comvox,
The doc is quite clear:
If you want to see a list of items that meet the source, one of the two "Source Items" view will do the job quite well, that is the main reason why you have that display option !
