Can this be done? There is the ItemParent field, but that's text only so not sure how one would get at the item's ID to check its property. Does it require scripting? Thanks.
I think that you are right; there is no way to know the IDitem of the parent.
There is also no way to query the IDItem to find out which Grid(s) show it.
Getting the ID of the main parent item is not difficult (a smart field will do the trick) but I'm not sure how that would get you closer to what you want.

You could set the ItemColor field to have a column inheritance, but it might have unwanted effects. In Field Management Dialog - Equations see this section
