Hello, everyone. I'm a long-time Ecco Pro user giving InfoQube another try after seeing new posts about it on the Outliner Software Forum.  I've tried it a couple of times in the past but I didn't fare well.  I'm determined this time to give it the effort it deserves.  I've spent probably 30 hours working through the tutorials and forum posts.  I've tried to bite off something I can manage, so I've avoided getting into advanced filtering at this point, and I don't have a big interested in calendars and Gantt charts.  I want to use InofQube to take research notes and perform various filtering and sorting operations.

I decided I was ready to actually start using it to see how it would go.  I quickly ran into trouble with grid behavior.  I know I'm not the first person to have this problem or raise the issue.  I think it's likely the single thing that's most likely to scare off new users.  It's an unsettling feeling to see your work suddenly disappear (even if you know it's not really gone).

I started out very simply:  just a single item column with additional notes in the HTML pane.  I wanted to drag a link from my browser to the HTML pane.  As my cursor crossed the InfoQube window all my grid items suddenly disappeared.  I did not click on anything, did not execute any commands, and did not perform any operations.  The items just disappeared on their own while I was dragging the link across the screen.  It took me about 30 minutes to figure out how to get the items back.  I didn't document this step by step so I can't tell you everything I did but it was pretty frustrating to get it figured out.  On the upside, it did help me understand grids a little better.

I had another incident a few minutes ago, and this time I took notes on what happened.  I created a new grid "Fin" and was making notes in the items column, and adding notes to the HTML pane, as before.  This time I found a snippet on the web that I wanted to add to my notes.  I selected a passage in Firefox, clicked on the infoQube tool
"Copy Content to InfoQube" and selected "add to current grid."   Once again, all my items disappeared and were replaced by new items.  It appears that the source was changed from "Fin" to "Financial".

I thought I could use what I'd learned before to restore the grid.  All I had to do was change the source box from "Finances" back to "Fin".  I couldn't do that because "Fin" was not listed in sources.  So I went to  View>Grids>Manage Grids>Data>Source.  Once again, "Fin" was not in the source list, so I was unable to restore my items.

So then I went to the properties pane and saw that "Fin" was listed.  I did right click>Show items with values for this field.  That displayed my items, but they were in the Scratch grid, not the "Fin" grid.

At that point, I returned to View>Grids menu and this time I did find "Fin" in the source list, and that solved the problem.  I have no idea why it wasn't there before.  The only thing I can think of is that maybe I needed to do a refresh in there somewhere.

So the summary of the problem is:  1) Why would dragging a link to the HTML pane cause my items to disappear?  2) why would pasting a clip into the current grid cause the source to change?  3) Why wasn't my new grid listed in the sources when I tried to fix the problem caused in step 2?

It's a fantastic program and I love the power and flexibility but I'm starting to feel snakebit about the grid behavior.

Thanks, Wayne

welcome to the forum!

Pierre is back around June 10, but I can help a bit in the mean time.

Regarding the specific points:

1) This doesn't happen here. Could you describe in a fes reproducible steps what you're doing ?
2) Not sure what you mean exactly by "pasting" a clip in the current grid. Text only ? Directly in the item field, in a cell ?
3) I haven't seen that before... but everything is possible. Again, if you could provide steps to reproduce it...

A few more explanations...  The only the thing your really need to understand at this point is that  "source" just means the main criteria/filter that grid will use to populate rows. The source is based on fields/properties (you see them in the properties pane). All secondary filters are applied in addition to the source.

When you create a new grid using View>Grids>new grid, without selecting any special option, IQ creates a new  field/property based on your grid's name and uses it as the grid's "source". Maybe this should be more explicit as user have trouble understanding the relationship between grids, fields and sources concepts.

In any case, it's possible that you inadvertently changed the source and that's why you're items disappeared. I noticed a while ago that there's a bug with the focus going into the source bar, even if it's hidden.... then, typing anything on the keyboard changes it. IQ will ask you if you want to change it though... just answer no/cancel, and nothing will happen.

Anyway... What you did is good (going into the manage grids dialog/window), but you could've also just display the source bar (alt+s or click the button on the right of the bar at the top of the grid), and change the source in the box at the left.... providing that it was there. The fact that your "fin" field wasn't displayed in the list is strange. If it was displayed in the properties pane, it meant that it did exist. I just tried to create a grid, change the source and look in "View>Grids>Manage Grids>Data>Source", and the source/field from the newly created grid was there.

Amando,,

Thanks for the welcome.

#1 - I had InfoQube open in my right monitor and Firefox in my left monitor.  I left clicked on the icon in the Firefox URL box and started dragging the link towards the InfoQube HTML pane located on the right side of the screen in the other monitor.  As I crossed the grid area, the link suddenly disappeared, as did my item column in the open grid.

I haven't been able to reproduce it so I wouldn't spend any time on it.  If my finger slips off while dragging the link over the grid area then the drag/drop URL dialogue should come up, and that didn't happen.  I also noticed that if you drag across the grid tabs it will activate the grid you're passing over but that's not what happened either.  It's not a concern.  It was just such an odd thing that I thought I'd ask if anyone else has run into it.

#2 I was in Firefox which has an InfoQube addon that puts two IQ symbols in the toolbar at top.  I selected a snippet of text in Firefox then clicked on the left InfoQube icon in the toolbar.  That brings up a dialogue asking where you want to paste the text in IQ,  I selected "Current Grid" at the lower left of the dialogue box.  When I completed this operation, all my items disappeared.  There was no typing involved so I couldn't have changed the source field.  I haven't been able to reproduce this one either.

#3 The probable solution is that a grid refresh was needed to make my new grid show up in the list.

I don't mind running into problems like this because they're a good opportunity to learn the program.  I was curious about what caused these but it's not a big deal.  It's more important to learn the recovery steps so I can quickly get back on track.

Hi WayneK

I still can't reproduce #1

I think I was able to reproduce #2 and #3 -- seems to happen with brand new created grids with automatic source creation by IQ. But I'll have to double check and I'm in a hurry now... So, later.

Don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Wayne.
I've been using IQ for years, but started a new file a while back and had a lot of trouble with it too.

I dont have much to add:

Yes, manual refresh can be necessary in IQ - in your example though, I cant think why it should be necessary.

Re the Source - it may try to autocomplete, but normally you can abort that using backspace key.

1) I cannot reproduce either
2) as Armando says, could you give more details there
3) sounds like one for Pierre

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for reporting this bug. I was able to reproduce it thanks to your detailed instructions.
As it turns out, Adding and Deleting fields did not trigger events to update grids. This is now fixed in v0.9.26PreRel27
