I used the menu item Column > Sort Items Ascending, thinking that only TLIs would be sorted.  I was surprised when displayed SLIs were also sorted.  SLIs that were hidden (i.e. collapsed) were not sorted.

Is this the intended effect of Column > Sort Items Ascending?  I can adjust my behavior accordingly.

Hmm,
I see the manual is outdated - 5. Sorting and Grouping Items

Column sort used to sort only TLI's - as you say, it now sorts everything visible.

Maybe Pierre or someone else could give us a summary of current sort possibilities (and I could update the manual)

I haven't looked at the manual but I don't think it's changed.
The column sorting behavior is set by the column filter's settings : 1-root, 2-all items, 3-all items and sub-items.
(While I do understand after some thinking -- no need to explain here -- I still find the terminology confusing : all items vs all items and sub-items (all items meeting the source ? not meeting the source ? which one if there's an option including subs) ? root items (we usually call them top level, so why root? Is root the same as TLI) ?

well, the manual doesnt even mention the Column Filter settings with regard to sort :-/
IIRC there used by a simple 'sort includes sub-items' (or something like that) selectable in the menu.

I had no idea that - and it's not clear to me why - Column Filters would have anything to do with sort --
which presumably means it's not going to be clear to your average user either...

And yes, also what you say Armando about unclear terminology.

The Column Filter options would seem to me to be more helpfully shown on the Filter dialogue (Ctrl+G).
What do you think Pierre?

Likewise, it would be very helpful if the sort options were clearly shown - but I dont have any definite ideas here...

Are the two bound up together Pierre?
Or can they be separated?
If they both work according to Column Filter options - It seems unintuitive to me - what if I want to sort everything and only filter TLI's (or vice-versa would be more common).

Hi Tom
I think you might be referring to the Source Bar sort options. There, if you activate the Sort button (right end), you do have a Sort items and sub items.

Concerning the column filter option it should probably be worded differently : column filters/sort

This plus a couple terminology changes and it would be easier for the user.

(There are other places where terminology should really be changed -- not thinking about my own needs here, but the new / moderately new user -- ; they've been described elsewhere.)

In reponse to Tom, Pierre and Jim.

I triple checked and it seems that filter settings doesn't affect sort anymore. In any case, not in the way I thought it was! But I know it really did at some point -- I could dig and find some past version that did it. I don't know if the behaviour was intended, but I remember playing with it.

The strange thing is that I thought I reproduced it yesterday! Maybe because I inadvertently used 2 different grids, one with and without the sort bar.  But I don't think so. In any case : sorting using the sort bar (and not sort box) and the just the column header definitely behave differently. Maybe that's the difference Jim is experiencing...?

thanks Pierre !

I just checked and the column > sort sorts all loaded items in the grid.
I could add a command or option to sort TLI only

Please add the option for TLI sort. I get caught by this every so often.

Yes, please!  It would be great to have an option to select between:
- sort TLIs only
- sort subitems of selected item(s)
- sort TLIs and subitems

And maybe harmonize both sort types? (right click header column mode + sort bar mode)
