hi,

I'm using the portable version of IQ, and keeping it in sync between 3 different machines. I have two questions about settings and customisation:

1. I'd like to keep my settings synched so that no matter what machine I'm using IQ on, I have the same keyboard shortcuts, it always starts up the way I want it, the fonts are as I want them etc etc. When I say "portable", I mean I'm running the portable version from each machine locally. I also have it on a USB stick, but that's just for keeping the machines in synch, I'm not actually running IQ from it.

Settings all seem to be stored in the users folder. The problem is that on each of these three machines I have a different user name. So I end up with three users in effect and separate settings for each one.

Is there any way I can have a single set of settings I can carry around from one machine to another? Or do I have to accept I just go through the same customisation process for each one?

2. When I get a new version of IQ, the default process for the portable version would be to just unzip the file to the existing folder, overwriting any settings files in there. Am I right in thinking the users folder is the one that contains all the customisation information, or is there any other location I need to be aware of? Is there any clever way of keeping those settings intact from one version to another, or would I just have to make a copy of the users folder beforehand, and copy it back in afterwards?

Hi DavidF,

Try this and report back if it works correctly:
  1. Install IQ Portable in a Dropbox-like folder
  2. If the accounts have different names, force IQ to use the same name by starting it with a .bat file. See InfoQubeForUser1.bat for an example
If you don't want to install IQ on Dropbox, you use junctions to store only the Users folder on it. It should work, though I've never tried it.

HTH !

Thanks Pierre.

I tried out the bat option, and that certainly works in terms of letting you open IQ with any arbitrary user, regardless of which machine you're on. Pretty neat. Just to clarify: say I have 3 user names, user1, user2 and user3, corresponding to 3 machines. And I'm using user1's settings across all 3, via the .bat file.So say I'm on user2's machine and I add some custom keys. Those changes would go into user1's settings, right?

You know, I always wondered what that .bat file was for... now I know!

I'm not too into Dropbox but it's something I'll bear in mind.

How about question 2? If I install a new version of portable IQ, is there any clever way of keeping customisations? And is it only the user folder(s) I would need to worry about?

cheers
