I don't understand how the "browse mode" get's turned on automatically though.
Here I have to click on the button every time I want to turn it on and so it never gets in the way when simply editing.
I may have inadvertently turned browser mode on earlier by exploring around and did not realize what I'd done. I see in browse mode you can write once, but then when you move to another item and back again, you can no longer edit what you wrote. This seems to be one of the many, many gottchas for the new user. I also see that when you turn on browse mode nothing indicates that you have done this...or that you are in browse mode. This sort of problem needs to be prevented through "idiot proofing."
You are perfectly right.
I had tried to turn browse mode ON and see if it would stick but it didn't, for some weird reason. Maybe is it linked to the sequence of actions?
This is reproducible :
- write something
- save it or leave the item for another one.
- Come back to the item and turn browse mode on
Now browse mode will be turned ON automatically whenever there's something in the HTML pane.
Thanks!

And what is wrong with this behavior ? If you turn on Browse mode, it stays, except if you go to a blank HTML page, in which case it is turned off (as there is no point being in browse mode on a blank page)
well, I didn't say anything was "wrong" per se. I just pointed out how to reproduce the behaviour reliably as I couldn't before.
Note that I personally don't have too many problems with the feature, but that doesn't mean that the feature isn't problematic (as I've learned from previous experiences). So I'll let others speak.
Thanks

We should also build a list of these "gottchas", at the end of the manual:
(InfoQube User Manual)
23. New user gottchas...
I have one myself -- not up to date -- and I put some of it in Mantis once in a while. But maybe a list like Tom suggested would be good too (?).
When needed, we could have a separate Mantis issue for those critical items in the list and hyperlink it.
