So you enter data in the item cell

What do you do to record it in IQ?, ie:

<return> = new item

<ctrl><return> = child

<esc> = escape, ie doesn't record

<tab. = takes user to next cell

<F2> does the trick but is this the way it was intended?

Yes! You're doing things "right". Reference -- link to nonexistent node ID 145 --. Tha data "takes" with just about anything, but "esc". I also use F5 for this purpose quite a bit (refresh grid).

KeithB - What do you think? Suppose:

<enter> saved entry

<ctrl><enter> save & created new sub-item

<alt><enter> save & create new sibling

Isn't that more natural than <F2> or <F5> if you just wanted to save & not do something else?

Edited 01/18/09 01:54 pm KeithB, Something to consider: I tried <F5> as a way of 'saving' data w the result that the item disappeared from view. I figured out that it had to do w the sort filter & was able to retreive my item by looking thru 'all items' & attaching the necessary field to sync it with the source filter.

the database is saved as soon as you make any changes - there may be an exception (somehow/where) in the html pane

I requested Right-Alt+Enter for to make an item above current item but dont know if it's coming through ;-)

I believe the F5 thing will be fixed eventually - needing no key

F2 to edit Item field, Enter or F2 to edit any other field

I like the ease of creating new item and F2 is standard "edit name" key so I happy enough with that

Tom, This still leaves me with two suggestions / comments:

1. I believe user should be supplied with a forced save funciton (suggest <ctrl>S even tho it is currently strike thru)

2. I believe <enter> should be key used to complete the entry of data, not create a new item which could be relegated to

<ctrl><enter> = new sibling item

<alt><enter> or something else to new child item

As far as insert above (a good idea IMHO) <ctrl><shft><up> might be more indicative of the function

Just my .02 I think shortcut keys should be as representative of the function as possible; makes it easier for old brains like mine to remember

I tend to enter lots of items at once, so the Enter key creating a new item works great for me, also consistent with Ecco.

another way to move from editing an item is the up or down arrows

why do you want a forced save Jan if there's an instant automatic save?

I agree it's good if shortcuts representative (like the one you propose for new item above - I posted it in relevant thread)

I think, for most people, creation of new item gets priority and therefore the easiest key ...

Because I believe it adds confidence. Most -- maybe not IQ -- save only when focus changes to another topic / item or something else. Maybe Pierre can clarify when / what triggers a save in IQ.
