How do I copy a TLI & subs and replicate it in another location?  I tried to copy a TLI and subs, and paste the copy to another location, but I did not succeed in replicating the suboutline in the new location.  If I hit Ctrl+C on the TLI, pasting it inserted only the TLI, and not its subs.  On the other hand, if I expanded and highlighted the entire suboutline, and then pasted it - the entire suboutline was inserted into a single item.  So how do I do this to get the desired results?

sorry to ask such a noob question!

Hi Jim

first my disclaimer :-)
I dont use the Copy & Paste of items very often, so I'm no expert. (But I think it's not very user friendly at times.)

Dialogue shown on copying an item (full item selected or tree field selected):

Select the highlighted one.

Were you trying to paste it as a TLI?
I found pasting as TLI (nothing selected in the grid) - or pasting with a TLI that has no sub-items selected - I found these problematic.
The items often dont show - they are created, but because they usually didnt have the correct source field ticked (source of the destination grid) they didnt show in the grid (seems to me they should - i.e. it's very confusing).

You say:
> if I expanded and highlighted the entire suboutline, and then
> pasted it - the entire suboutline was inserted into a single item

You may have been pasting into a field that was being edited (?)

If you select a sub-item in the destination grid, you will be offered this dialogue:

Highlighted item will make new, seperate copies of the copied items.
This works for me every time (pasting with sub-item in the destination grid selected)

If you want an item to show as a TLI in another grid there are other options - let us know if that's what you wanted!

Thanks so much Tom - your technique does work.  I was wanting to copy a suboutline to another location in the same grid.  I tried a number of different methods to accomplish this goal - with results that seemed a bit strange to me - but your technique is the only method I've found so far that works.

I found some forum discussions on copy/paste functions in IQ - but haven't found discussion of it in the user manual.

It seems like this aspect of IQ is a work in progress?

What wasn't clear to me was:
  1. You want to view the same items in a different grid, or a different spot in the outline, or
  2. You want new items (copies of the original items) in a different grid or spot in the outline
There are a number of ways to do each of these

(and yes, this subject has been the subject of many threads and requires some more improvements)

I was seeking to do #2 - copy the TLI and its subs to a new TLI plus subs, to another location in the same grid (for purposes of revising the data while keeping the older copy).

Here's the related manual page Jim:
Item Copy & Paste - Selection - Drag & Drop   -  explains copy/paste and drag-n-drop options
There are a couple of thread links at the bottom of that page (there may have been more recent threads, I'm not sure).

If you find the manual page confusing, or incorrect, let us know & someone will fix it :-)

As Pierre says, there's also the option to "view the same items in a different grid, or a different spot in the outline"  (see the second option in screenshot #2 above).
Pierre -
you know the way shift+drag-n-drop will copy a file in Explorer - would that be a possibility in IQ (or has it been discussed - I dont remember, and it seems like a good idea to me...)

Is this broken? or did it ever work?

I think it's fair to say that this behaviour is totally unexpected, and incomprehensible for a new user which is not good...
The manual page (1155) doesnt give any indication that this is problematic -
Pierre could we ideally get a "fix" where:
  • the new items are "given" the source field - if applying the source field is not possible, a message to say that it's not possible. We could create a new manual page to instruct people how to add an item to a different grid as a TLI.
I realise it's complicated by filters - but for someone who is familiar with source/filter concepts it's easier to figure out what's happening. Also the more basic user is going to mainly have a simple tick-box source

The manual need to be modified at any rate imo (if there's no objections I'll have a go at some stage this week).

I agree with Tom's suggestion.

Moreover, I'd like to point at the fact that grad/drop and item from one grid to another with a "complex source", dropping it as a TLI of course, doesn't work either. This shouldn't be though as creating an item in the grid with the "complex source" as a TLI does work, so why not the drag/drop ? Seems to be a little bug.

(Manage grid clearly stipulates that [task] will be assigned to all TLIs.)
Here's the complex source : [Task] or [zztask]
Auto-assign the following fields : [zztask]
