Hi Pierrre:

For a variety of reasons I try to minimize my use of Microsoft products, especially Office. LibreOffice is quite good and its Calc is superior in some areas to Excel. I would like to use LibreOffice with a ODC type file. I think LibreOfiice has an analogous format  although I am not certain. Is this possible to do?

No problem !
IQ grids are visible to other applications through ODBC.
A bit outdated but this was discussed here 9. Example-Finances

Using odc with Excel makes this very easy. Can you build in something as straightforward as that with LibreOffice?

ODC (Office Data Connection) is a Microsoft software feature enabled by an ODC file. See: support.office.com/en-ca/article/Create-edit-and-manage-connections-to-external-data-89d44137-f18d-49cf-953d-d22a2eea2d46. If you wish to see a similar facility in LibreOffice, you will need to argue for its creation in that forum.

More generally, InfoQube is heavily dependent on Microsoft technologies. The database used internally uses the Microsoft JET engine, which is the same database software which underlies the desktop version of Microsoft Access. InfoQube is written in the Visual Basic VB programming language, which is used only within the Microsoft ecosystem. Although it might be desirable to move away from such a heavy dependence on Microsoft technologies, I think we should be careful for what we ask. In particular, Pierre's competences are notably in Microsoft-focused development. I would argue that InfoQube is nearly ready for prime-time and that has to be the focus of our hopes and our requests.

I know that ODC is a MS specific format. LibreOffice is fairly compatible with Office. My thinking is that if this is not a major matter it would be helpful to have this choice. I am not lobbying for this to happen, I am requesting it. Pierre indicated that it would not be difficult, so why not include it? With regard to your last sentence, I think (though I am not sure) that something similar exists in LibreOffice. If this is true, my request here to incorporate this into IQ is appropriate.

I am very familiar with what you write. I've been using IQ for about as long as you. I too am eager to see version 1, but just like birthdays, it is just a number. There will still be some rough spots, UI improvements, useability problems, etc. Again, this is my request and I would appreciate it if Pierre (without too much difficulty or distraction) could incorporate this.

Not really. One has to work with the available features, and LibreOffice does not support ODC files. You may want to contact them and propose it though !

If you know of a similar "simple" connection file, compatible with LibreOffice, please tell me about it. I'll research and see if I can add it !

I know that ODBC is supported and setting up an ODBC database source is really easy and only takes a couple of minutes.
Once setup, you can use it in many different applications, including LibreOffice.

All the grids which you set "visible to other applications" (setting is in Grid Properties) will be visible to these applications.

HTH !

Thanks Pierre. As soon as I get the time I'll try your suggestion.
