All I want to do is find the next occurrence of a word on the current grid.  In most programs you simply use Ctrl-F and repeat until you find the specific occurrence of the word you want.

When I use Ctrl-F (supposedly the "quick search"), it opens a new search grid.  That's not what I want.  I want to stay on the current grid and go directly to the word.  Or better yet, filter the current view so it shows only the items that contain the word.  That would be ideal.  Surely, there's a way to do that

Instead I'm taken to another grid and things only go downhill from there.  I think this is showing the new omnibox.  I spent 15 minutes reading posts on omnibox and still have no idea how to use it or what it's good for.

So now the search grid lists supposed occurrences of my word.  Except my word is nowhere on the page because the search grid does not show the column that contains the word.  OK, I figured i just click on one of the shown links and it'll take me to the word in the orginal grid.  That doesn't work either.  It just takes me back to the original grid and doesn't show where the word is.

Update:  I figured it out but I'll go ahead and post this because maybe it'll help someone else.  To filter the current view using a search word: Column>Column Filters>Show Filter.  A dialogue pops up and you can enter the search word there.  That filters the current view using that search word.  To me, that's ideal.

Follow up question:  is there a way to set this filter dialogue to show permanently in the tool bar so I can type in a word any time and filter the view?

Comments

  1. To filter, Grid > Show Filter (Ctrl + G) is the fastest way to filter the current grid. Enter the text and enter
  2. To search, Grid > Auto-Search (Ctrl + F3) and start typing. F3 for the next occurrence (small bug, in the current release, the found text is no longer highlighted, I'll fix it)

I can't get the Ctrl+F3 combination to work for me.  Nothing comes up.  Any idea what I can try to resolve it?

OK, got it.  I was expecting a search box to come up.  That's nice.  Thanks for your unending patience.

Text highlighting during auto search is broken in the current version. It will be fixed in the next.

I thought it was working but it's not really.

1) There's no indication when it enters search mode.  The column I've selected is not marked by a dark border.

2) At least half the time that I start typing the search mode, instead of searching, it puts the typed text into one of the cells (ie it never entered search mode).  I've tried selecting the whole column and also selecting the top cell before starting to search, but neither method works at all consistently.

3) When it does follow through with a search, it fails to find most of the matches.  I see numerous instances of the search word that it does not find.

4) Curiously, for the two results it did find, the text highlighting did work (the found word background color changed to white, contrasting with the blue background of the selected column).

Good point, the information was spread around quite a bit...

I've created a book page describing what the Omnibox is and what it can be used for. See 1. Omnibox
