Hi there,
I've been a heavy EccoPro user for 20-odd years and now I'm starting a project in IQ and I like it a lot, but still struggle with some of the differences. If I get it right IQ Fields correspond to a large extent to Folders in Ecco. There seems to be one major difference - you can organize Folders hierarchically, which with dozens of them gets quite handy - is there a way to do that with Fields?

I am also puzzled by a screenshot in IQ documentation which shows a tab bar on the left margin. I suspected it might be tab that could toggle among different workspaces/grid sets - is this true? I haven't found any way to show it in the menus. What is it and how do I control it?

Thanks a lot!
Pavel

Hi Pavel !

I think you'll find that just about everything that Ecco could do, IQ can do too. Regarding the fields, check-out this doc page: 6. Properties Pane

As to the vertical tabs, it could be one of 2 things...

If you're referring to the grids menu, you can tear it off the main menu:
  • View > Grids and then click on the ....... at the top and tear it out
  • You can then dock it where you want or leave it floating
Otherwise, the browser-like tab strip can be moved to be in one of 4 positions. Use View > Layout > Workspace tabs (or Tools > Options > Program > General > Workspace Tabs)

The vertical tabs are definitely from the view>grids menu "torn off".  You click the area at the top (the dots), then drag to produce a toolbar titled "Views".
You can then double-click that toolbar to dock this views toolbar at the top.
Then you can drag it to the left, for it to appear as shown.
You can right-click it the toolbar and it will show as "Views..." and can be switched off.
Unfortunately this sub-menu that seems to be a toolbar can't be "turned on" like the other toolbars.

This is all I could find in the current documentation:

8. All Menu Commands> 3.View Menu:
  • Grids: Displays Grid related commands. Sub-menu can be detached and docked to anywhere
Tips & Tricks>Working with Grids and Tabs alludes to it:
Grids can be opened using the Grids sub-menu inside the View menu (which can also be placed as a toolbar, with a button for each grid, shown vertically in the figure below.).

Brilliant!
Thank you!

 Hi Pavel,

There are a lot of former ECCO users here (including me). Once you adapt to IQ I believe you'll find it can do everything ECCO could do, and much much more. Have fun! It is ridiculously customizable, so if you don't see how to do something just post...there is almost always a way to do it.

  Hi David,
I believe you are right. So far it's quite an exciting adventure. Still there are quite a few things I struggle with. Right now it's this: I don't seem to fully grasp the relationship between Fields and Grids. If I start from the parallels between Grids corresponding to Ecco Notepads/Views and Fields to Ecco Folders, I don't get why if I start a grid based on a field, an items stays in the grid even when I untick its field in the column. If I have an item in an Ecco folder and untick this folder in its column, the item vanishes. It doesn't in IQ. In other words, if a grid is a filtered view where an item should be shown if it meets certain properties, in this case a Yes value in a filed it was based upon, why does it stay there after it stopped meeting this requirement. I hope the question is clear enough :)

Hi Pavel,

This is by-design... Too often in Ecco, I would, by mistake, click a checkmark and the item would immediately disappear from the notepad. Immediate undo would restore it, but otherwise, it was very difficult to put it back in. And making changes to an item had to be done in the "right" order

In IQ, changing field values does not remove items from the active grid. That way, you can make any changes and rest assured the item will not go away. Press F5 to refresh the display when you want to
