One thing I like about this community website is the outline under IQ Community (left collapsible menu). Simple and aesthetic. Also, there are 3 icons:
  1. Item closed
  2. Item opened
  3. Item has no subs
I found a way to also have 3 states (currently there are only 2 states) to the expand button / bullets. Here are 2 propositions. Any clear winner?

Compared with the current:

Also, as a bonus, I can now use the bullet for drag-drop, something Ecco users have been asking for. I personally really like the one on the top-right. Thoughts anyone?

This looks great, Pierre. I like the top right too. Easy on the eye, simpler than the one on the left.

I must say that I like the [+] and [-] version I currently use. I don't feel the need for an extra symbol telling me there are no sub items... More symbols mean more stuff to decode. But that's me...

could these be optional ?

I'd say from a simplicity point of view Armando is right.  The bottom left shows all 3 states in a way that is obvious to beginners.  the build (or settings) I have mean no dotted lines between nodes, so it's super clean visually with only the [+]/[-] symbols where children exist.

For visual clarity the top right is a clear winner over top left.  Top left doesn't add any extra value to justify the visual clutter.

I'd think of keeping my [+] ones but would be very happy with top right also.

I guess it is what you get use to. I use the lower right (Ecco) with the "tree lines" option turned on. My second choice would probably lower left.

What is not illustrated is anything without grid lines & that is where the connecting lines are valuable visually. I agree dots add ease for drag / drop. Personally, I don't like Ecco dots per Se (maybe because it's already been done) & think we should take advantage of new graphics metaphors

My preferences would be top right with bottom left second. The more intuitive the better!
