One ECCO feature I find myself missing is the "Home Folder" (uneditable), which when displayed as a column within any folder automatically identified the initial/originating Folder in which an Item was created.  Handy reference info for me.  I've not discovered a similar feature in InfoQube, does it exist ?  If not, any eventual plans for a similar "Home Grid" feature ?

No, IQ items do not have the concept of a Home Folder. Items exist, that's it. There are many ways to create items and some do not fit in the "home folder" concept.

n.b. BTW, I never saw the point of this Home Folder concept in Ecco.

For myself the most useful purpose for Ecco Home Folder was that upon execution of a word(s)/string search Home Folder ALWAYS automatically identified the source folder(s) containing the word(s)/string searched and found, to me an invaluable component of the exercise - knowing where the info is contained.  I haven't figured out how to accomplish the same result in IQ - I can find the word(s)/string but not the containing grid.  For example; I just searched the word stormwater, and found all instances of it no problem, but I can't determine whether the various instances are contained in my ToDo or Appointments or Planning or Projects grid - which for me would be most helpful.  IQ does provide a grid called HomeGrid but I've not figured out what it's purpose is. Thanks.

Armando says (from second forum thread listed below):
To be displayed in the Shown in column, an item has to be effectively shown in the grid, and the grid needs to be closed/saved (grid>save) with the item showing.

Filters will also affect what is visible in the grid but I personally think the Search window should ignore these (but can see that that could cause problems as well)

Doug,
what you currently can do, is:
  • open Properties pane, expand Filled Fields & Parents
  • in Quick Search (Ctrl+F) tick Synch Panes
  • search for your item
  • select the item - it's info will show in the Properties pane - you get an idea from that what Grids it's shown in
  • Note: in the Properties pane, Shown in Grids section has the same drawbacks as the Shown in column in the Quick Search window

thanks Tom,
Somehow that doesn't quite work for me though.  Best that method does is tell me the item exists in the "Search" grid, which of course I already know because I've "searched" for it.  Maybe it has something to do with the majority of my data having been imported from Ecco rather than generated in IQ.  Don't know.  Sounds like Amando has it nailed on the head though, so presumably the solutions will eventually arrive.  Thanks again.

Hi Doug,

As you know, items don't belong to any grid in IQ per se (they are just displayed there) and that is why it's a challenge to have IQ do what you want.
I think that eventually IQ will need to incorporate a way of telling  if items are potentially shown in certain grids or if where they were created in the first place -- I've made a few suggestions about this in the past, so did Jerome a few weeks ago.

In the mean time, you can :

1- do as Tom suggested. The properties pane gives more indications than you seem to suggest : parents, etc. gives clues to where an item should be best displayed. It doesn't just show that it exists in the search grid.

2- when you search for an item using the quick search method (ctrl-f), you can decide right away where you want to display that item (using the  "Show selected items in current grid as hoisted items" option from the drop down menu in the quick search dialog) -- in 90% of cases, I know where I want to see an item.

3- you can use a source configuration so that all items displayed in certain grids will have a special identifier. I you need info about that one, just tell me.

a.

as I say it's just to give you an idea - if you look at the parents & expand them you may be able to tell - I believe Pierre has plans so as you say "presumably the solutions will eventually arrive"
It's a complex one though - so if you have more ideas, wishes, etc you know where to post them!

Ah, I see Armando has just posted

thanks Tom and Armando,

I do believe I recall reading somewhere on this site that Ecco could be said to "contain" items for display in the folder-views whereas IQ "filters" items for display through grid-views.  You have helped me remember that and the conequent challenge Pierre faces in this regard.

take care,
Doug
