Can't remember at this point how this NTFS index/journaling feature is "named" exactly... But I'm sure you know what I mean. Is that still possible ?

[One reason why I came back with this one -- mentioned a while ago -- is that more and more people are linking stuff to their DB, and linking problems are bound to happen... When thousands of links are disrupted for whatever reason, it's not fun.]

FYI, this is already "partly" enabled:

Right-click on the file(s) >> Create shortcut
Move the shortcuts to the .files folder (not essential but recommended)
Drag-drop shortcut(s) to the grid
Links will now work even if the file is moved / renamed

Improvements:

If moved, users need to click on the shortcut in Explorer first, this refreshed the shortcut [edit] This is now fixed (next release) [/edit]
Automated creation of the shortcut (file link dialog)

~~would going in a subfolder be (almost) as good? (Folders could get very busy with all those shortcuts)~~

For the record, I've had to change a lot of links recently - if you have a bunch of items linked to files from one folder, & all those files are moved to another folder it's relatively easy (as long as the links are 'dynamic' of course):-

Select relevant items
Copy the new folder path e.g. D:\New Folder\ and replace the old folder path in the File path field in the properties pane
that's it ;-)

For a few months now I have been putting all my linked files in a folder interestingly enough called "Linked Files" which is in my documents\Infoqube folder. From there I've been drag / drop a file to grid. Is this the right way to keep the links in sync if / when I need to move the "Linked Files" folder?

I'm sure it's ok -- Pierre did mention that it's "better" (speedier ?) when in the IQ folder though. Not sure why... But it should be perfectly OK. Try to rename one of your linked files and see what happens ;).

I thought it doesnt make any difference where a linked file is, so long as the Filepath & Filename fields are correct?

Ok, I see.

What Pierre and I are talking about is : links which can't be disrupted even when linked file (ea *.doc ) are renamed or moved

example : I link a doc to the DB. I then decide to rename the doc and even move it. I click on the link in IQ and my doc still opens. That's what Pierre's method described earlier can allow.

1- Yoy first create a link in explorer -- e.g : right click on the file > Create shortcut.

2- Move the shortcut where ever you want -- preferably in the IQ file folder (for portability reasons, maybe...)

3- than drag drop that link to your IQ base.

You can't modify the shorcut name in explorer, most probably, but the original file name can change and the file can even be moved around.

if you're moving files (files which are already linked to IQ) en masse to a new location, I would suggest to change the links the way I suggested (see below)

It's possible (or even probable) that currently linked items could be converted to the new 'way' but we'll have to see how it's implemented (& how much work is involved!)

You mean that users wouldn't have to create the shortcut in explorer first ? If yes, that'll be great as it'll allow seemless of IQ and the file system.

Yes that is what I mean. when you drag-drop a file, a shortcut will be created in YourIQBase.files\Shortcuts and the link will be to that shortcut. That way, files can be moved / renamed.

To support FAT and USB drives, if the shortcut does not work, IQ will try to open the file as it does right now (as described in Link to Files, Folders and URLs)
