I'm getting repeated "not responding" messages where the screen goes slightly gray and the hour glass appears.  Everything is then frozen for 20-30 seconds.  This is happening 10+ times a day.

I'm working with a modest database of only 10 mb.  My ultimate database will probably be 50x that size, which has me worried.  There shouldn't be a problem with system memory (16 GB Ram).  No other programs are doing this.

Update: per usual, I thought of something to try immediately after posting this.  I'm compacting and repairing the database.  Will report back on whether that resolves it.

Update-2: Didn't help.  I got two "not responding" messages as soon as I went back to work.  Is it the nature of the work that could be causing it?  I have all my items displayed in the Inbox grid and am assigning them to topic fields by ticking off field boxes in my Form list in the Properties Pane.

Hi Wayne,

Your IQBase is certainly not of any size that could be causing this. A couple question, ideas:
  1. Try turning on the new Off-line mode, perhaps this is Internet related
  2. What storage type are you using ? USB sticks are not suitable for IQBases.
  3. Do you have backups enabled and if yes, where are they located ? What is the frequency ?
  4. Are you using synched databases ? And if yes, where is the sync folder ?
  5. Are you using the Calendar ? I still has to resolve some small locking issues in Windows 8, but it only last 1-2 seconds at most, and only when scrolling
Those are my first thoughts. We'll resolve this, I'm sure

1) Will try
2) Internal hard drive - nearly new, high-speed
3) Will check on backups
4) No synchs
5) Not using calendar

Not having any luck and now have a new (recurring problem).  Why am I losing my settings when I update the portable version?   I did the following:

1) I extracted the files from the portable zip file
2) I moved all my existing files to a "void" folder
3) I moved all the new files into the existing InfoQube folder
4) I copied my settings files to the InfoQube folders following the instructions on the download page (I copied over everything in AppData: menuHTML.dat, menu.dat, Default.Dock-oct15.dat, etc)
5) When I ran the new version, my panes are re-arranged and my customized toolbars are gone.

In fact, maybe this is the source of the "not responding" problem.  I was getting tired of losing my settings so on the last update I kept all the existing files in the InfoQube folder, and just replaced the .exe file with the new version.

often more than just the exe is changed.
I used copy over contents of the zipped file to my IQ folder -- settings didnt usually get lost, but yeah, sometimes some of them did.
(Nowadays I compare the contents of the zipped folder with the contents of my IQ folder and just copy the new. This should be the same as the previous method though in terms of results.)

Good tip about checking all the files to see what changed and only copying those over.  That should preserve my settings better than what I was doing.

Hummm, that is not what that page says (InfoQube Program Install and Set-up)
But rather

You're right.  I missed the \Users\YourUserName part.  No wonder I was having problems.  I'll be more careful next time.

I have 60a installed and am working in offline mode.  No change in problem.  It starts as soon as I start assigning items to other categories using my form fields.

All backups are set to default.  I haven't changed anything.  I think it keeps four back versions and backs up every 10 minutes.

I probably have one of the biggest DB at about 500MB. No freezes whatsoever.
I did have freezes in the past (about a year ago), almost everyday, and it got fixed at some point. Right now, I'm still using using 59, and no problem.

Did you try reverting to 59 and see if it works? If 59 solves the problem then it's something with 60/60a

I'm going to continue to with 60a (which I just got) but will consider reverting if it persists.

  1. What frequency do you see these lockups ?
  2. Does it happen at a regular rate ? i.e. every x minutes...
  3. Does it happen with the sample database ?

I'm working on a different file now and the problem has not recurred.  I'm thinking it was caused by my botched installation of the portable version.  I have a proper installation of 60a now.  We'll see if the problem re-appears.

Thanks,

Hi Wayne,

What is the status on this issue? Is it fixed?

I haven't seen a recurrence.  It was happening when I was copy/pasting items from one database to another and assigning them to fields.  That work is done.  I haven't seen it occur in any other situations.

I'm inclined to think it had to do with my bad installation.

You can mark it fixed.  Thanks.
