I'm looking at the "getting started" documentation, so thought I'd start a thread for related queries.

On the -- link to nonexistent node ID 860 -- page (shopping list tutorial), instructions are given to create a new sample file -- and then delete the contents:

  • If you haven't created a Database yet, then click on File -> New (click)
    (Clicking on "New" will create a "New IQBase with sample data"; note that we DON'T want a "New blank IQBase", from the sub-menu option).
    Give it a name.

  • [..]

  • The shopping list example is included in the new file just created, so to do it yourself, completely erase all data:
    Tools > Database Management>Delete all items, fields, forms and grids... (Warning, you can lose all your data)

=>
Can anyone explain why it says to NOT use the Blank new file, yet then it says to delete all content?

Comments

It's probably some mistake. 1- either the test DB should be created completely blank for that initial exercise, 2-  or another grid name could be created, different than the shopping list...
Lots of cleanup will be necessary, it seems...

It would be helpful if the documentation would compare the relationship types with those of a relational database: one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many. IQ seems to have variations of these relationship types. A good 'getting started' reference manual would detail each of these, with simple examples.

This is a very helpful article — thank you. It also informed me of features and demonstrates IQ's capabilities beyond what I realised.

Idealy I like to take a very structured approach to database development, starting with an entity relationship diagram etc. The comparison with relational databases helps to take advantage of the already well-developed theory and apply it to IQ.

Great !

Just keep in mind that IQ's relaxed attitude's regarding relationships is by design and allows for interesting things, things that could not easily be done with relational databases.

And just in case it isn't clear at this stage of your learning, the Item text field is central to information management in IQ and is something other models don't have (except for defunct Ecco Pro)

Don't hesitate to ask, should you have any questions !
