I had to replace my computer (again).
1) Should I switch to the portable version? I believe Pierre recommends that but I've used the full install for several years. When I tried the portable version I had problems with losing my toolbar set up after updates (undoubtedly, my fault).
2) I still have my old C drive installation. Can I recover settings from that? (toolbars, options settings, custom colors)
I'm planning to install to the D drive (not the C drive where Windows 10 is located). I started doing that with other programs and it has worked out well. When my computer has been replaced, I've been able to continue using these programs with all settings intact.

How do I ?

Hi Wayne,
A new computer is always an exciting moment (for me anyways, my girlfriend will disagree 🤪)
The portable version is easier to manage, being isolated from protected folders et al and your settings are right there, in a sub-folder
You should not loose any settings on updating
To copy settings from one installation to another, see section 10 of this page.

I created a file on another computer. To transfer it over, I only need the file itself and the associated SNDB.Files folder, right?

This is correct
If the SNDB.Files folder is not on the same drive / folder as the old computer, it can cause some issues, though many are correctly handled

[Update = skip to my last post for solution]
OK, I finally got my new file system set up and I have lost all my images in the Doc panes. It just displays the image file name instead of the image itself.
Is my only option to re-create the exact same folder arrangement that I had before? Is there some way to refresh the file references so they display in the Doc pane?
Wayne
Update:
1) Encouraged when I tried a second file. The images there were preserved (I tried a half dozen)
2) Tried a third file and it was worse than the first. Many of the Doc panes are blank with no file references. Others just have an "x" icon.
The user manual suggests…
The user manual suggests doing the following to make the Doc Pane work correctly:
I could not get this to work.
#3 = there is no "File Types" tab in Windows 10 Folder Options. Tried to find the #6 Checkbox elsewhere but couldn't locate it. I don't think this setting exists in Windows 10.
I think I've exhausted what…
I think I've exhausted what I know to try. I see my options as:
1) Restore old file structure
2) Manually change the hyperlink paths (there are thousands)
Shouldn't this issue be mentioned in the User Manual (I don't see it)? It's a pretty severe limitation if you can only set up your database at one location and can never change it without breaking links to your own images.
Any suggestions on how to proceed and prevent this in the future would be welcome.
OK, it's mostly solved. …
It's mostly solved. When I looked at the description of the new release I saw a reference to browse mode. When I turned it on, most of the images started displaying.
I still have some images totally missing (no link in the document pane) but I can live with that. I can probably track these down by searching my hard drives by item ID number to find old backups.
So, it appears InfoQube CAN find the images even if the path shown in the hyperlink is wrong.

Hi Wayne, could you tell us…
Hi Wayne, could you tell us what method/s you used to add images etc? (With apologies if I have overseen this info above).
(EDIT// I ask cause I'm also concerned about this topic.)
Tom, I use screen capture…
Tom,
I use screen capture software to grab an image and paste it in the Doc Pane.
When you insert an image in the Doc Pane, InfoQube automatically saves it as a jpg named wit the item ID number. This is very handy as a security measure.
Let's say you have an item whose associated Doc image has disappeared. You can usually recover this by doing disk searches based on the ID number (this is assuming you back up your database in multiple locations over time). You can then copy the image folder back into the current database to recover your image.
That's a short version of it. Let me know if I wasn't clear.

Thanks for the explanation Wayne. I was worried about images sent to IQ via email. Must have a look where those images are stored and do a test see if they work successfully on another machine.
