This may have been covered before:

Each day I open multiple versions of a couple of grids - sometimes different filters, but mostly simply different views, sometimes hoisted.
What exactly is on view so-to-speak fluctuates so seems to me there's no point in making new grids (but maybe should think about that idea).
If I could save these grids as "sub-versions" of the main grid (which would then naturally be shown as "sub-grids" of the main grid in a tree hierarchy)

Or maybe this could be covered by "on close of IQ: remembering the state of open Tabs" - a session manager for IQ

Of course it's possible I should simply reorganise my grids creating a bunch of new ones...

Great idea Tom. It would be nice to name our grids & be able to select them from a drop down menu
That coupled w a memory of the last tabs opened (like google, chrome  IE) would save a lot of time. I, too, am tired of going thru a daily routine w my specialized grids
Grid tree is an interesting idea too but drop down might be easier to implement & might serve as well.

1- A drop down menu as we already have (ctrl-shift O) is enough I think to implement the "grid outline" (as mentioned in the other thread).

2- The idea of "saving variations on a Grid" should soon be easy as I believe Pierre wants to soon implement features like grid copying/importing, etc.
mantis 122 : Add Grid>Save As... to create duplicate,
mantis 579 : copy grid

Would that be enough ? it might very well be, especially if we can organize grids "hierarchically" in an outline so that all the variations can just sit as children of a main grid.

3- Another thought : If the filters were more easily manageable, maybe wouldn't you need to duplicate grids, etc.?

This should either be covered by the "nameable filter" feature (mantis 19 : Add named filters, shown on a toolbar and ANDable or ORable)

4- Another idea : A "Grid state" feature, which would memorize a basic set of sorting settings, filter settings etc., and that we could name (à la Outlook : views) might be handy.

i.e. : We'd have the grid, and a menu would show us a series of "views" saved for that grid. But maybe would that add complexity to the UI. It works in Outlook though.

2) Save as (mantis 122) + a Hierarchical Grid tree would cover my request Armando

but,
the more I think about it, the more I realise it's the session-saver / "memory of the last tabs opened (like [FF], chrome, IE)" - that's actually what I mainly need & want.
Anyone know if there's anything along those lines in Mantis ?

It's a feature I use a lot in FF & also in Directory Opus ('saved Lister layout') and it's perfect for IQ

More background:
I tend to have a few versions of same grid open (in dual or more panes) - mainly to compare content from different parts of the grid, but also to move or copy items. (So filters arent really much of a factor for me personally.)
Now because I use Dropbox I have to close IQ down after each session (otherwise no backup). So at startup I have to rebuild my panes & tabs (life's a chore lol)

Good. Then maybe we should put the hierarchical grid organization siggestion in Mantis. I don't think this would crowd out the UI.

I use this feature a lot and I suggested it a while ago:
Mantis 374 : Open ALL last opened grids.

I work in the same way. This a great IQ strenght -- To have the same grid displayed in different windows/tabs.

As for the dropbox problem, i suggest you backup every x min. to the dropbox folder instead of another folder, that way you don't have to close anything, and dropbox is updated without doing anything. The dropbox will contain the backup file, with all previous versions. However, it could be that this is not how you want to work (i.e. You need your sndb file to sync at work or something like that.).
