Hi there,

I have still some doubts regarding the file linking in IQ...Hopefully you can help...I will explain my doubts with an example:

In my case, I often work in small teams on different projects, which means we create a common directory in which we store all project-related files. As we are on-site at the client, we use a directory on a local "netbook server". Returning to our office, we put the files on our office server in a different archiving directory.

Using IQ, I would like to link the files stored on-site on the netbook directory. However, as those files are moved to the archive server and deleted on the netbook, IQ should modify the links to the new  file locations.. Is this technically possible? I know that with Windows shortcuts activated, this sort of should work out. However, testing this functionality, if I move the files around a bit, the link gets lost... Anybody with an idea or the same problems?

Thanks! Thorsten

PS: What do you think of - in addition to the already possible linking features - IQ giving an option (upon dragging the file into the grid) to make a copy of the file locally in a IQ subdirectory?

Oops. I thought I answered that one. Sorry Thorsten.
This is more a question for Pierre though. I really doubt that there's an easy solution for IQ to relink files automatically without you showing it at least part of the path... But who knows.

Hi Thorsten,

If you can have a similar directory structure on the netbook and the common directory, then IQ should locate the file automatically. Many options exist and are explained here:

Ah! This is good to know... (Of course, I'm not thorsten...) :-)

A thank you to both of you, Armando and Pierre!

The documentation website 8.20 "Link to files and folders has helped quite a bit. However, some questions remain..

a)
I understand that IQ will modify the links if a linked file is moved to a different directory only if the linked file is stored in the files directory of the database directory.

I think this possibility to move the file and have IQ adjust the link accordingly is brilliant, however I often will not be able to put all linked files within the database directory...;-(

And with relative linking outside the database directory, IQ would not adjust the links in case a file is moved, right?

This leads me to the question / suggestion:
Would it be possible to have a setting in IQ (i.e. in Data Storage) where the user can define the location of the "files directory"? This would really help as I would not have to change the storage policy, and you could even define a network drive as your files directory where anybody can have access to the files and even though, the user can link those in IQ and have the links update automatically. What do you think, Pierre?

b)
How do I tell IQ to do relative linking by default? How do I change absolute links to relative ones without editing each one manually?

Thanks a lot for your answers!

Best regards
Thorsten
