using IQ to maintain an inventory of items, best methods?

Submitted by jimspoon on 2019/04/05 23:18
Sometimes it's a puzzle to figure out the best way to use IQ to organize your info.  (And one important thing to remember is that you're not tied to any one method - you can often employ multiple methods without them conflicting with each other.)

I use IQ to maintain inventories of some of my possessions, especially computer-related stuff.  I started this a long time ago, long before the Tags feature was implemented in its current form.

I created a hierarchy of yes/no fields (parent fields and child fields) to keep track of my computer items.  Just as an example, here are the fields used for flash memory cards:

Computers and Electronics > Hardware Items > Storage Devices > Flash Memory Cards > MicroSD

The field "Flash Memory Cards" has other yes/no child fields besides "MicroSD", including CompactFlash, MemoryStick, and SD.

Issues with ITEM EDITOR when Document is stored as External HTM file

Submitted by DragonGem on 2019/04/03 08:24

I have started using External HTM files for storing web-page captures because it makes the Document accessible to 3rd party HTML editors (WizHTMLEditor primarily) but have run into a couple of issues when using the Item Editor in conjunction with these external HTM files.

The problem with porting options / settings to a different system

Submitted by LeftEccoForIQ on 2019/04/02 06:18
I've just realized what's causing my difficulty in porting my options / settings, toolbars etc. to my tablet: the fact that these are stored in a folder that depends on the username on each system. As this is different on my tablet, IQ would creates a new user folder based on the tablet's Windows username and just ignores the settings in the desktop-username-related folder that I've carried over.

It seems somewhat iffy that I will now have to rename the user folder every time when moving the IQ folders to the tablet, but I guess it makes sense if you want to cater for multiple user profiles... Maybe if IQ finds that it's being started without an existing settings folder for the current system username, it could offer to import the settings from other folders that exist in the 'Users' subfolder of IQ?

Problem with renaming of local image files when copying Items to a different database.

Submitted by DragonGem on 2019/04/01 12:36

There are times when I like to have captured web-pages store their image files locally so that they can be used other purposes but still maintain their web "context". I accomplish this by pasting web-page fragments into an embedded IQ HTML document. I then convert that document into an MHT to force downloading of referenced images. Then I use WizHtmlEditor to resize and re-name the often crypticly-named embedded images. I then convert back to a embedded HTML document which stores the image files in an ItemID folder. All of this works reasonably well.

Why are various fields "Locked" so that they can't be Removed?

Submitted by DragonGem on 2019/03/31 16:24
There are a number of Fields that can not be REMOVED from the List of Fields. I understand this for ITEM-specific fields and other System-related fields. But fields like "ThisWeek" and "AddressBook" don't fall into those categories. I know that a number of these fields are referenced in Equations and the default VB Code but other similar fields like "Duration" are not Locked. Is there specific criteria for Fields that can't be removed Databases?

TLI disappearing from grid

Submitted by Frenchwolfie on 2019/03/31 09:21
Hello, I think I encountered a problem with the disappearance on an item I created as TLI in a grid. I can still find it when I search for its text via the Omnibox and then hoist it : it appears hoisted in the proper grid, with all its siblings. When I dehoist (Ctrl + H), I can't see it anymore. Is there a way to get it back on the unfiltered grid ? TIA

Question About Hidden Columns

Submitted by David_H on 2019/03/31 02:34
One of the things I've always struggled with, with IQ, is the amount of columns I like to have visible vs them taking up too much space. Stacking columns can help, but only so much. Making them narrow is no good, because then you have to manually change the sizes whenever you want to see the column data.

Hidden columns seems like it would be the perfect solution, however it seems that if I hide several columns, the moment I unhide them the setting is erased. Now if I want to make them disappear I have to click on each and hide them again. Is there a way to create a set of hidden columns and turn them on and off as needed, without having to redo them all every time you unhide them?

Open to any suggestions how to achieve this now? I also looked at column sets but that won't work either.

Thanks

Shortcut Lockup

Submitted by WayneK on 2019/03/30 17:20
Trying to customize keyboard shortcuts, I'm getting a lockup every time:

1) Tools>Keyboard Shortcuts>Customize
2) Keyboard>Category "edit">Command "Copy as Hyperlink"
2a) "Press new shortcut key" = Alt-C
2b) Click ""Assign"

3) Message: "This shortcut is currently assigned.  Do you want to re-assign this shortcut?"
4) Click "yes"
5) Then find there's a second, identical message box behind the customize screen ("The shortcut is currently assigned...")
6) Program is locked up at that point and can only be closed by killing the process.

Reproduced multiple times.  Updated to 112n, but same lockup
