Roadmap 2018

I thought it might be fun to compare roadmap speculations

My current guesses:

Category 1) On-going:
 UI tweaks
Documentation

Category 2) Within the new several pre-releases:
 Hierarchical Tagging  Hierarchical Tagging System
additional html {doc} pane improvements.

Category 3) Absolutely has to get done before V1.0:
See Category 1

Category 4) Either after V1.0, else will slow down V1.0 considerably

Replacing the doc pane component with an RTF one has been discussed for some time, and sounds to me like it may be quite a large undertaking.

[Edit] removed the word "speculation".

Paste All Lines, Create Items if Necessary - suppress creation of item for empty line?

Submitted by jimspoon on 2018/07/15 18:53
Say I want to paste some text from a web page into a grid, creating a new item for each line in the pasted text.  I press Ctrl+C to copy the text to clipboard.

When I press Ctrl+V to paste the text, the Paste Options dialog appears, and I select the second option - "Paste all lines into selected cells, creating items if necessary (9 items will be created)."

Nine items will be created, even though five of these will contain any text in the Item field.  Because of the formatting of the web page from which the text was copied, the Clipboard contains empty lines.  IQ creates several items with no text in the Item field.  I have to delete these items manually.

Would it be possible to to add a checkbox to the Paste Options dialog, "Don't create items for lines with no text"?

HTML Editor

While we are on the subject of the HTML pane soon to be the Doc Pane. I have not found away to have the HTML code when it is in view in the pane to wrap to the width of the pane. It would be very help if it did however. This would provide both the beginning of the code and the end of the html code as well as everything in between.

Thanks,
John

Ctrl+number - current item jumps to new vertical position in window

Submitted by jimspoon on 2018/07/14 16:20
When I press Ctrl+number to change the expansion state of the current item, the grid display jumps to a new vertical position in the window - the current item is still the current item, but it is now shown towards the bottom of the window instead of where it was (vertically).  Not a big deal, but a little disconcerting.

IQ UI improvements: an on-going process

MyBase, MyInfo, and UltraRecall all have something in common that makes them more approachable than IQ. Well two things. Obviously IQ is much more flexible and open-ended in it’s workflow possibilities, and of course that makes it tougher to grasp. Assign from just complexity difference, IQ doesn’t use ICONS to differentiate data types (as far as I can tell).

The vast majority of people (myself included) are used to interacting with software where the items convey strong sense of place and content.

Indexed Linked File - visual cue?

Submitted by jimspoon on 2018/07/07 11:16
Index Linked File looks like a great new feature.  It appears that the text of the linked file is stored in the FileText field, and the number of bytes is stored in the FileTextSize field.   Just as the text of a HTML pane document is stored in the ItemHTMLText field and the size is stored in the ItemHTMLTextSize field.

I just indexed a linked file (win.ini) and then did a Ctrl+F search for text in the file ("mci extensions") - this is what came up in the Live Search tab.

I don't see that the Live Search pane indicates where (what field, where in the field) the found text is.  So the user has to figure that out, ah, the found text is in the linked file.  It would be great if the Live

A change of nomenclature

It strikes me that the HTML pane ought to be called the Document pane or the Doc pane.

I think someone mentioned this in another thread but I think it is important enough to deserve a thread of it's own.

Yes it can hold HTML, but it can also hold RTF, Markdown, Ink and SVG.  So calling it the HTML pane is misleading, it's purpose would be more clearly expressed and easier to understand for new users if it had a more appropriate name.

can't move to, expand/collapse sections in options dialog with keyboard?

Submitted by jimspoon on 2018/07/01 19:48
When I am in the Options dialog with some sections collapsed, I can't use the arrow keys to move to a collapsed heading and expand it.  Seems to be a mouse-only operation?

For example, in the dialog below, no keystroke seems to get me from 1.6.1 to 1.6, or to expand/collapse 1.6.
